(Credit: <em>Journal of Polynesian Archaeology and Research <\/em> co-editor Mara Mulrooney)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the wake of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Archaeology Week (September 26&#8211;October 2), the <a href=\"https:\/\/uhpress.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Press<\/a> joins two non-profit organizations to launch the <a href=\"https:\/\/uhpress.hawaii.edu\/title\/jpar\/\"><em>Journal of Polynesian Archaeology and Research<\/em><\/a>, an open-access title that will soon accept submissions for its inaugural issue.<\/p>\n<p>The new journal will be co-edited by <strong>Mara Mulrooney<\/strong> and <strong>Jillian Swift<\/strong>, who are both affiliate graduate faculty at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa. The two editors developed the publication as a forum to bring together important research and conversations around archaeology, history and heritage management in Polynesia. The editorial board is comprised of <abbr>UH<\/abbr> faculty including Professors <strong>Patrick V. Kirch<\/strong> (anthropology, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa), <strong>Ty P. Kawika Tengan<\/strong> (ethnic studies, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa), <strong>Seth Quintus<\/strong> (anthropology, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa) and <strong>Peter Mills<\/strong> (anthropology, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo), among others.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The <em>Journal of Polynesian Archaeology and Research<\/em> will continue the tradition of publishing cutting-edge results of archaeological research in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and throughout Polynesia, as well as providing a forum for discussion and debate regarding archaeological practice in the region,&rdquo; noted Kirch. &ldquo;I expect that the journal will be an essential resource for both scholars and the engaged public.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Free and open access<\/h2>\n<p>For more than three decades, both of the journal\u2019s sponsoring organizations&#8212;the Society for Hawaiian Archaeology and the Easter Island Foundation&#8212;have been committed to promoting research and dialogue on the archaeology of Polynesia. While distribution of previous publications were limited to members, this new journal will be published open-access and freely available to all readers.<\/p>\n<p>This fall, the editors will review manuscripts through the journal submission system (forthcoming) and publish the first issue in 2023 on <a href=\"http:\/\/evols.library.manoa.hawaii.edu\">eVols<\/a>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr>\u2019s open-access, digital institutional repository for both the university community and researchers around the world.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Journal of Polynesian Archaeology and Research<\/em> will replace two journals that will cease publication, <em>Hawaiian Archaeology<\/em> (published by the Society for Hawaiian Archaeology) and <em>Rapa Nui Journal<\/em> (published by <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Press in collaboration with the Easter Island Foundation). Throughout the past 30 years, <em>Rapa Nui Journal<\/em> published more than 33 volumes, and <em>Hawaiian Archaeology<\/em> published 15 volumes and four special publications.
