There, he met Leeward <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> oceanography Professor <strong>Donn Viviani<\/strong>, who became a wonderful mentor.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Dr. Viviani is a great person to talk to, always wants to see students succeed, and consistently shares opportunities for scholarships and internships,&rdquo; said Dela Cruz.<\/p>\n<h2>Inspirational mentorship<\/h2>\n<p>Dela Cruz was further motivated to pursue a degree in <abbr>SOEST<\/abbr> after meeting several alumni and hearing about the opportunities available to them as students and the careers they chose after graduation.<\/p>\n<p>For his <abbr>GES<\/abbr> senior thesis research project, Dela Cruz has been analyzing distribution patterns of bacterial pathogens in a wetland environment under the mentorship of <abbr>SOEST<\/abbr> Earth Sciences Professor <strong>Henrietta Dulai<\/strong>. With additional guidance from two other mentors, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kapiolani.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Community College<\/a> Professor <strong>Mackenzie Manning<\/strong> and <abbr>SOEST<\/abbr> doctoral student <strong><span aria-label=\"Kui\">Ku&#699;i<\/span> Keliipuleole<\/strong>, Dela Cruz\u2019s research focused on Sumida Farms, a freshwater spring farm that grows the bulk of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\u2019s\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½\u2019s<\/span> watercress.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Although the springs are the main source of nourishment for the farm, during heavy rain the runoff travels into the farm carrying pollutants from the nearby urban infrastructure,&rdquo; said Dela Cruz. &ldquo;This work has made me more aware of the potential implications of any water entering the city\u2019s municipal storm sewer system and strengthened my overall goal to protect <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\u2019s\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½\u2019s<\/span> clean water.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Preparing for the future while thinking about home<\/h2>\n<p>This past summer, Dela Cruz was offered an internship with the City and County of Honolulu\u2019s Storm Water Quality Division, which is tasked with protecting <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\u2019s\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½\u2019s<\/span> clean water and subsequently the vitality of diverse ecosystems.
