Ann Inoshita and Derek N. Otsuji<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Leeward Community College<\/a> Assistant Professor Ann Inoshita<\/strong> and Honolulu CC<\/abbr><\/a> Associate Professor Derek N. Otsuji<\/strong> have been named this year\u2019s recipients of the Elliot Cades Awards for Literature, the most prestigious literary honor in Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>. Inoshita\u2019s award is for an established author and Otsuji\u2019s is for an emerging author.<\/p>\n

Ann Inoshita<\/h2>\n

Inoshita teaches English at Leeward CC<\/abbr>, earned a master\u2019s degree from the University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa, and has been an active member of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s writing community. She is the author of M\u0101noa Stream<\/em>, an acclaimed 2007 book of poems, and has been published in collections such as Random House\u2019s Reel Verse<\/em> (2019) that include many nationally-known poets.<\/p>\n

Her pidgin poem “Japan Trip” was published this year in They Rise Like a Wave: An Anthology of Asian American Women Poets<\/em>. Inoshita has also participated with other poets in several renshi<\/em> (a form of collaborative poetry) projects, including No Choice but to Follow<\/em> and What We Must Remember<\/em>, in which each writer posts a poem constrained by the last line of the preceding poet\u2019s poem.<\/p>\n

Her works have been published in Bamboo Ridge<\/em>, Journal of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Literature and Arts<\/em>, and Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Pacific Review<\/em>. In 2016, Inoshita helped to create The Reading Room<\/a>, a collection of recordings of local author interviews and readings.<\/p>\n

“Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> literature has diverse voices rich in culture and language. It is an honor to receive this award,” Inoshita said.<\/p>\n

Kono, Christy Passion, and Jean Yamasaki Toyama, in which each writer posts a poem constrained by the last line of the preceding poet\u2019s poem.<\/p>\n

Derek N. Otsuji<\/h2>\n

Born on Oʻahu<\/span>, Otsuji teaches English at Honolulu CC<\/abbr> and is the author of The Kitchen of Small Hours<\/em>, a volume of poetry selected by Brian Turner as one of two winners in the Crab Orchard Poetry Series competition that was published last year by Southern Illinois University Press. He is a 2019 Tennessee Williams Scholar (Sewanee Writers\u2019 Conference) and has received awards from Bread Loaf<\/em> and the Kenyon Review<\/em>.<\/p>\n

His poems are widely published in local, national and international journals, including 32 Poems, <\/em>Bamboo Ridge, <\/em>The Beloit Poetry<\/em> Journal, Bennington Review<\/em>, Cincinnati Review<\/em>, Crazyhorse<\/em>, Pleiades<\/em>, Rattle<\/em>, The Southern Review<\/em> and The Threepenny Review<\/em>.<\/p>\n

He won first place in the Eisteddfod Crown Competition, and studied writing with the late Welsh poet Leslie Norris.<\/p>\n

The Cades awards have been given annually since 1988. They were created by Charlotte and J. Russell Cades in memory of Elliot, a teacher and lover of literature. The awards include a cash prize for the winners. The awards were announced by the Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Literary Arts Council<\/a>, and will be presented at 4 p.m. on October 1, as part of the 2022 Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Book and Music Festival<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
