Published in September 2022, <em>Out of the Shadows of Angkor: Cambodian Poetry, Prose, and Performance through the Ages<\/em>, is featured in the biannual publication <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/manoajournal\/\"><em>M\u0101noa: A Pacific Journal of International Writing<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Assembled over 30 years, the book features:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>14 centuries of literature, from ancient transcriptions to a graphic novel excerpt (full color).<\/li>\n<li>Rescued literature nearly lost during Cambodia\u2019s civil war, the Khmer Rouge regime, and its aftermath.<\/li>\n<li>Literature never before available in English, including translations of Khmer, Sanskrit and French works, alongside pieces penned in English by writers of the Cambodian diaspora.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;[T]his book seeks to bring Cambodian literature out of the shadows of the great temples of Angkor and out of the ashes of a war that killed most of the country\u2019s authors and destroyed countless irreplaceable books, whether by fire, neglect, or being turned into cigarette wrappers or toilet paper,&rdquo; wrote Sharon May, one of the anthology\u2019s five guest editors.<\/p>\n<p>The book includes passages from <em>Reamker<\/em>, an adaptation of the Hindu Ramayana, and works from the Cambodian Golden Age, including Khun Srun on political repression. Emerging writers, poets, musicians and performers are also featured pushing boundaries with diverse reflections on contemporary Cambodia and the diaspora.<\/p>\n<p>Members of the  <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> community can view the works for free via <a href=\"https:\/\/muse.jhu.edu\/article\/858949\">Project Muse<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/uhpress.hawaii.edu\/title\/manoa\/\"><em>Out of the Shadows of Angkor<\/em><\/a> is the companion volume to <a href=\"https:\/\/uhpress.hawaii.edu\/title\/in-the-shadow-of-angkor-contemporary-writing-from-cambodia\/\"><em>In the Shadow of Angkor<\/em><\/a> (spring 2004). Both appear as part of the <em>M\u0101noa<\/em> series.<\/p>\n<h2>More on the <em>M\u0101noa<\/em> editors<\/h2>\n<p><em>Out of the Shadows of Angkor<\/em> was produced by the distinguished and long-standing editorial team <strong>Frank Stewart<\/strong> and <strong>Pat Matsueda<\/strong>, from the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/english.hawaii.edu\/\">Department of English<\/a>. This is their penultimate issue, produced prior to their retirement in fall 2022. Their final issue will feature the literature of Burma, to be published in winter 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Stewart is a writer, translator and founding editor of <em>M\u0101noa: A Pacific Journal of International Writing<\/em>.
