This year\u2019s <abbr>ARLISS<\/abbr> competition hosted 15 teams, including teams from Japan, Mexico and Costa Rica. The <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> team was the lone U.S. representative.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_165386\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-165386\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/uhcc-project-imua-11-2-a-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"people standing by rockets\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-165386\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/uhcc-project-imua-11-2-a-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/uhcc-project-imua-11-2-a-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/uhcc-project-imua-11-2-a.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-165386\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Caleb Yuen, D&#8217;Elle Martin and Alyson Wirtz built and launched rockets seeking certifications.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;Here in the Black Rock desert, we are the only American team representing,&rdquo; said <strong>Caleb Yuen<\/strong> from Honolulu <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr>. &ldquo;I think it\u2019s important for all the students of community colleges and universities to come out here to learn the fundamentals and the basic rules of rocketry.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/imua.wcc.hawaii.edu\/\">Project Imua<\/a> is a faculty-student enterprise of multiple <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Community College campuses in affiliation with the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Space Grant Consortium. Project Imua\u2019s primary mission is to experiment with high-powered rocketry and to design and fabricate small payloads for space flight.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"blocklink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/tag\/project-imua\/\">More Project Imua stories<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The September launch, or Project Imua Mission 11, was a mixed success. The rocket flew and one of two parachutes deployed properly. The rocket contained a land rover designed and assembled by <a href=\"https:\/\/windward.hawaii.edu\/\">Windward <abbr>CC<\/abbr><\/a> that did not exit the rocket and maneuver autonomously as planned. An atmospheric detector designed and assembled by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.honolulu.hawaii.edu\/\">Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr><\/a> collected data during the rocket flight that will be analyzed by the team.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_165376\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-165376\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/uhcc-project-imua-11-3-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"people carrying rocket\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-165376\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/uhcc-project-imua-11-3-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/uhcc-project-imua-11-3-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/uhcc-project-imua-11-3.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-165376\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Project Imua team with their rocket in Black Rock, Nevada.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;That\u2019s rocket science,&rdquo; said Project Imua Manager <strong>Joe Ciotti<\/strong>, a Windward <abbr>CC<\/abbr> professor. &ldquo;But like the recent Artemis setbacks, each failure is taken as an opportunity to learn and improve for the next flight.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Seven members of the Project Imua Mission 11 team also launched individual rockets they built in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xprs.org\/\"><abbr>XPRS<\/abbr> (eXtreme Performance Rocket Ships)<\/a> event to earn various National Association of Rocketry certifications.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Both Honolulu Community College and Windward Community College have a lot of funding and programs that students can get into.
