Franco, Brandon Marc Higa<br \/>Back row left to right: Miku Lenentine, Candy Branson, Theresa Greaney, Denise Pierson,  Sang-Hyop Lee, Jaclyn Lindo<br \/><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A new economics pathway for minority students between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kapiolani.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Community College<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa<\/a> is being created with a $1 million grant from the National Science Foundation (<abbr>NSF<\/abbr>). <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> was one of only 10 universities nationwide to receive a five-year grant to support underrepresented groups at vulnerable career transition points who are most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The <abbr>NSF<\/abbr> held the competition for minority-serving institutions in <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.nsf.gov\/funding\/initiatives\/epscor\">Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research<\/a> jurisdictions.<\/p>\n<p>The project, &ldquo;<abbr title=\"Research Infrastructure Improvement Program: Bridging EPSCoR Communities\">RII-BEC<\/abbr>: Transcending Barriers to Success in Economics (<abbr>TBSE<\/abbr>) for Underrepresented Students: From COVID-Affected to Climate-Resilient,&rdquo; aims to transfer 100 participants from disproportionately affected groups, including Native Hawaiians, Pacific Islanders, Filipinos and women.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_165296\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-165296\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/kapiolani-manoa-economics-nsf-grant.jpg\" alt=\"Students tabling at event\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-full wp-image-165296\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/kapiolani-manoa-economics-nsf-grant.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/kapiolani-manoa-economics-nsf-grant-108x130.jpg 108w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-165296\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Miku Lenentine and Winnie Canney at a Kosraean Women&#8217;s event as our communities emerge from COVID.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Economics Bridge Program will encourage students to take enriched introductory courses at <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> and qualify for tuition-free summer courses at the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa campus. Student peer mentors and ambassadors will personalize the pathway from an associate\u2019s degree to a baccalaureate and to expedited graduate studies.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;In <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, the COVID-19 pandemic is having a disproportionate impact on Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander and Filipino communities, and on women,&rdquo; said <strong>Bob Franco<\/strong>, co-principal investigator and director of <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>&#8216;s Office for Institutional Effectiveness. &ldquo;These four groups are also seriously underrepresented in the field of economics at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa. At the same time, environmental challenges that are further exacerbated by climate change threaten these islands, wider Oceania and coastal communities in Asia and the Americas.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Indigenous economics<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_165297\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-165297\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/kapiolani-manoa-economics-nsf-grant-students.jpg\" alt=\"Group of students\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-full wp-image-165297\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/kapiolani-manoa-economics-nsf-grant-students.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/kapiolani-manoa-economics-nsf-grant-students-108x130.jpg 108w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-165297\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students in <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr>&#8216;s economics course presenting their multidisciplinary project.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><abbr>TBSE<\/abbr> adopts the concept of &ldquo;Indigenous economics&rdquo; to contextualize economics coursework and provides student support services drawing on earlier <abbr>NSF<\/abbr> projects and previous federal investment in minority-serving programs. <abbr>TBSE<\/abbr> also leverages educational and research expertise at the two campuses.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Economics has given me so many opportunities to make a difference in this world,&rdquo; said Co-Principal Investigator <strong>Denise Eby Konan<\/strong>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa dean of the <a href=\"https:\/\/socialsciences.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Social Sciences<\/a> and economics professor. &ldquo;We need to expand our frameworks to include Indigenous and feminist knowledge and perspectives. This collaboration with <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Community College will provide a national model for economics education and draw in students who previously had not considered this major.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Active learning, peer mentoring, engaged research and internship opportunities will enhance the urgency and relevance of economics coursework so that students can embrace and ameliorate the challenges of biocultural restoration (restoring relationships between Indigenous people and their places) and climate resilience in their neighborhoods, communities, regions and world.
