David Ige submitted the names of eight nominees for the Mauna Kea Stewardship and Oversight Authority, a new management body tasked with decision making and stewardship relating to Maunakea. The list of nominees now heads to the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> State Senate for confirmation. A <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa<\/a> professor, former <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaii.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Community College<\/a> associate professor, University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Board of Regents member and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo chancellor are among the proposed members for the new Authority which was established via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.capitol.hawaii.gov\/session2022\/bills\/GM1358_.PDF\">Act 255 (<abbr>HB<\/abbr>2024)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I want to thank these individuals for stepping forward. Through this new stewardship model, I believe we can find a way for science and culture to coexist on Mauna Kea in a mutually beneficial way,&rdquo; said Ige.<\/p>\n<h2>Nominees<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Kamanamaikalani Beamer<\/strong>: An individual with &#699;\u0101ina (land) resource management expertise and specific experience with <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> island\u2011based management. Beamer is a professor at <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/hshk\/kamakakuokalani\/\">Kamakak\u016bokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies<\/a> in the Hui &#699;\u0100ina Momona Program at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa.<\/li>\n<li>Gary Krug: An individual who is recognized as possessing expertise in the fields of preschool through 12th-grade public education or post-secondary education.<\/li>\n<li>Rich Matsuda: A representative from a list of three names submitted by Mauna Kea Observatories.<\/li>\n<li>John Komeiji: An individual with business and finance experience who has previous administrative experience in managing a large private-sector business.<\/li>\n<li>Pomaikai Bertelmann: An individual who is a lineal descendent of a practitioner of Native Hawaiian traditional and customary practices associated with Mauna Kea.<\/li>\n<li>Joshua Mangauil: An individual who is a recognized practitioner of Native Hawaiian traditional and customary practices.<\/li>\n<li>Paul Horner: An individual from a list of three names submitted by the President of the Senate.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Michelle &ldquo;Noe Noe&rdquo; Wong-Wilson<\/strong>: An individual from a list of three names submitted by the Speaker of the House of Representatives. Wilson is a retired <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> CC Hawaiian Studies assistant professor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Three ex-officio, voting members will also serve on the Authority<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The chairperson of the Board of Land and Natural Resources, or the chairperson&#8217;s designee. This position is currently held by Chair Suzanne Case.<\/li>\n<li>The mayor of the County of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, or the mayor\u2019s designee. Mayor Mitch Roth has designated Douglass Shipman Adams, director, research and development management.<\/li>\n<li>The chairperson of the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Board of Regents, or a designee. Chairperson <strong>Randy Moore<\/strong> has designated <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Regent <strong>Eugene Bal <abbr title=\"the third\">III<\/abbr><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo Chancellor will be an ex-officio, non-voting member of the Authority.
