Richardson School of Law<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The guide was created and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaiiabortioncollective.com\/the-abortion-guide\">made publicly available online<\/a> after widespread confusion arose from <em>Roe vs. Wade<\/em> being overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court in June 2022, with patchwork restrictions on abortion varying by state. The newly formed collective includes <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> law school alumni <strong>Khara Jabola-Carolus<\/strong>, <strong>Cu Ri Lee<\/strong>, <strong>Deja Ostrowski<\/strong>, <strong>Keani Rawlins-Fernandez<\/strong>, <strong>Dina Shek<\/strong> and <strong>Rebecca Soon<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_165133\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-165133\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/manoa-law-Keani-Rawlins-Fernandez-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"woman smiling\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-165133\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/manoa-law-Keani-Rawlins-Fernandez-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/manoa-law-Keani-Rawlins-Fernandez-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/manoa-law-Keani-Rawlins-Fernandez.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-165133\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Keani Rawlins-Fernandez<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Consisting of members from the medical, religious and legal communities, the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Abortion Collective is &ldquo;a coalition dedicated to protecting abortion rights and reproductive healthcare,&rdquo; and &ldquo;a multi-disciplinary, community-based, and <abbr>BIWOC<\/abbr>-centered (Black, Indigenous\/Native Hawaiian, Women of Color-centered) formation coordinating all <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> islands for free, universal abortion access.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Abortion Guide provides medical and legal resources of information and financial support for those seeking an abortion in the state of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii.\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½.<\/span> It is the first comprehensive guide to abortion in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii,\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½,<\/span> which includes information on the legal rights and services for patients and medical providers.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> State Commission on the Status of Women initially convened the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Abortion Collective as a form of co-governance with the community,&rdquo; said Jabola-Carolus, a 2015 <abbr>UH<\/abbr> law school graduate and executive director of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> State Commission on the Status of Women.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_165132\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-165132\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/manoa-law-cathy-betts-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"woman smiling\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-165132\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/manoa-law-cathy-betts-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/manoa-law-cathy-betts-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/manoa-law-cathy-betts.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-165132\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cathy Betts<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Jabola-Carolus also emphasized the significance of connecting with the community. &ldquo;The organized response to the historic loss of federal abortion protections should not be led only by people knighted as experts by education and licensure. To end abortion stigma&#8212;the underlying problem&#8212;we need people who know how to talk to each community in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and to unify their community.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>It was Jabola-Carolus who invited Rawlins-Fernandez, councilmember of the Maui County Council, to join the collective and help address issues of access. &ldquo;We obviously have access issues throughout the <span aria-label=\"paeaina\">pae&#699;&#257;ina<\/span> (islands), with only <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> and Maui having abortion care. Girls and women on other islands need to primarily fly to <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> for this type of health care.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Abortion Guide is the first project of the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Abortion Collective, which formed a month prior to the guide\u2019s publication on August 21.<\/p>\n<p>Future plans for the collective include distributing the guide to communities that may be isolated from access to information and resources by factors such as location, age, gender-based discrimination, language and immigration status.
