{"id":164959,"date":"2022-09-13T09:00:07","date_gmt":"2022-09-13T19:00:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=164959"},"modified":"2022-09-12T15:13:46","modified_gmt":"2022-09-13T01:13:46","slug":"nsf-icorps-hub","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2022\/09\/13\/nsf-icorps-hub\/","title":{"rendered":"$1<abbr>M<\/abbr> award transforms world-class research into public-impact solutions"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/system-oic-innovation-corps-nsf.jpg\" alt=\"three people talking in front of building\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-164960\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/system-oic-innovation-corps-nsf.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/system-oic-innovation-corps-nsf-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/system-oic-innovation-corps-nsf-130x73.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A $1 million award from the National Science Foundation will help the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> convert its world-class research into solutions with public impact.<\/p>\n<p><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> has been selected as part of a new <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.nsf.gov\/funding\/initiatives\/i-corps\">National Science Foundation (<abbr>NSF<\/abbr>) Innovation Corps (<abbr>I-Corps<\/abbr>) Hub<\/a>, joining seven other universities&#8212;Arizona State University (lead); University of Arizona; Northern Arizona University; University of California, San Diego; Boise State University; University of Idaho; and University of Nevada, Las Vegas&#8212;to form the <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.nsf.gov\/funding\/initiatives\/i-corps\/view-hubs\">Desert and Pacific region <abbr>NSF<\/abbr> <abbr>I-Corps<\/abbr> Hub<\/a>, one of five newly-funded hubs.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Becoming an <abbr>NSF<\/abbr> <abbr>I-Corps<\/abbr> Hub creates a major opportunity for <abbr>UH<\/abbr> and <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> to elevate, grow and diversify the state\u2019s innovation ecosystem and economy,&rdquo; said <strong>Vassilis <abbr>L<\/abbr>. Syrmos<\/strong>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> vice president for research and innovation. &ldquo;This partnership is perfectly aligned with our strategic initiative to drive economic diversification and development across the state through research, innovation, entrepreneurship and technology.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The purpose of <abbr>NSF<\/abbr> <abbr>I-Corps<\/abbr> Hubs is to accelerate the translation of discoveries into new solutions that will benefit society. Each hub is responsible for supporting academic researchers in science and engineering by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Creating and implementing tools, resources and training activities that enhance the nation\u2019s innovation capacity;<\/li>\n<li>Identifying, developing and supporting promising research that can generate economic value;<\/li>\n<li>Gathering, analyzing, evaluating, and utilizing the data and insights resulting from the experiences of those participating in local, regional and national I-Corps programs;<\/li>\n<li>Providing opportunities to diverse communities of innovators; and<\/li>\n<li>Sharing and leveraging effective innovation practices on a national scale to impact economic growth and improve quality of life throughout the nation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The <abbr>NSF<\/abbr> <abbr>I-Corps<\/abbr> team in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> will be led by the <a href=\"https:\/\/research.hawaii.edu\/oic\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Office of Innovation and Commercialization<\/a> (<abbr>OIC<\/abbr>). The team will include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Vassilis <abbr>L<\/abbr>. Syrmos<\/strong>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> vice president of research and innovation;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Debasis Bhattacharya<\/strong>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Maui College Applied Business and Information Technology associate professor;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bardia Konh<\/strong>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa College of Engineering assistant professor;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Steve Auerbach<\/strong>, <abbr>OIC<\/abbr> interim director; and<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rebecca Chung<\/strong>, <abbr>OIC<\/abbr> technology licensing officer and innovation programs manager.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> <abbr>OIC<\/abbr> will be seeking subject matter experts, mentors and instructors to join the <abbr>NSF<\/abbr> National Innovation Network in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> to support <abbr>NSF<\/abbr> <abbr>I-Corps<\/abbr> experiential training and networking opportunities. The <abbr>NSF<\/abbr> <abbr>I-Corps<\/abbr> program and initiatives will be incorporated into <abbr>OIC<\/abbr> commercialization services and programs, including <a href=\"https:\/\/hitide.research.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>HITIDE<\/abbr>, a <abbr>UH<\/abbr> System innovation incubator<\/a>, and others.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This unique opportunity will complement and strengthen our programs and initiatives at <abbr>UH<\/abbr>, and help us cultivate an innovation and entrepreneurship culture, ecosystem and economy across the state,&rdquo; Auerbach said. &ldquo;Having an <abbr>NSF<\/abbr> <abbr>I-Corps<\/abbr> presence in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> also allows us to better contextualize <abbr>NSF<\/abbr> <abbr>I-Corps<\/abbr> training, resources and opportunities for our local academic researchers and entrepreneurs.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr>NSF<\/abbr> <abbr>I-Corps<\/abbr> program was launched in 2011 to support <abbr>NSF<\/abbr>\u2019s mission through experiential learning using the customer discovery process&#8212;allowing teams to quickly assess their inventions\u2019 market potential. <abbr>I-Corps<\/abbr> prepares scientists and engineers to extend their focus beyond the laboratory to increase the economic and societal impact of <abbr>NSF<\/abbr>-funded and other basic research projects. <abbr>I-Corps<\/abbr> is unique, advancing society by: increasing U.S. economic competitiveness; enhancing academic and industry partnerships; and commercializing cutting-edge technologies.
