Kapiʻolani<\/span> Community College<\/a> has been awarded a $1.5-million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF<\/abbr>) to lead the seven University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Community Colleges<\/a> in an effort to increase STEM<\/abbr> (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) degree attainment of underrepresented minority students in Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>.<\/p>\n

The key objective is to create a sustainable, articulated and purposeful community college program incorporating undergraduate research experiences, peer mentoring and online learning to expand the number of Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander and other underrepresented minority students who enroll, persist in, and transfer to a four-year STEM<\/abbr> degree program at a University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> campus.<\/p>\n

“A global pandemic has required educators to rethink the instructional environment, including those educators who inspire STEM<\/abbr> students,” said Kapiʻolani<\/span> CC<\/abbr> Chancellor Louise Pagotto<\/strong>. “Online learning broadens access to STEM<\/abbr> pathways and will help in creating an enhanced undergraduate experience designed to increase STEM<\/abbr> degree attainment for underrepresented minority scholars in Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>.”<\/p>\n

The funding from the NSF<\/abbr>\u2019s Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation<\/a> Bridge to the Baccalaureate program supports the Strategic Transfer Alliance for Minority Participation (STAMP<\/abbr>) Training While Online (TWO<\/abbr>) to incorporate systemic, inclusive strategies for successful online learning to recruit, retain, transfer and graduate a professionally prepared STEM<\/abbr> workforce in Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> and the U.S.<\/p>\n

The new initiative builds upon the NSF<\/abbr>\u2019s prior investment in UH<\/abbr> transfer pathways programs: the Islands of Opportunity Alliance<\/a> led by the UH<\/abbr> Hilo<\/a> and the previous UH<\/abbr> Community College STAMP<\/abbr> Alliance led by Kapiʻolani<\/span> CC<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n

“We are grateful to the National Science Foundation for this opportunity to strengthen our efforts to increase education equity in Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>,” said UH<\/abbr> Vice President for Community Colleges Erika Lacro<\/strong>. “Their support will allow us to continue our efforts in working towards closing the gaps in educational attainment for Native Hawaiians, Pacific Islanders and other underrepresented minorities and providing them opportunities to access and succeed in STEM<\/abbr> degree programs and ultimately joining our local workforce.”<\/p>\n

The STAMP<\/abbr>–TWO<\/abbr> project reflects the vision and expertise of John Rand<\/strong>, a retired physics professor who served as an NSF<\/abbr> program officer during his tenure at UH<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n
