A team of seven students and faculty from the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Community Colleges is building an 10.5-foot custom rocket to launch in the annual <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arliss.org\/\"><abbr>ARLISS<\/abbr><\/a> (A Rocket Launch for Student Satellites) competition in Black Rock, Nevada scheduled for September 12&#8211;15. Six members of the Project Imua Mission 11 team are also building their own rockets to launch in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xprs.org\/\"><abbr>XPRS<\/abbr><\/a> (eXtreme Performance Rocket Ships) event September 16&#8211;18 to earn various National Association of Rocketry (<abbr>NAR<\/abbr>) certifications.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_164448\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-164448\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/system-project-imua-arliss-2022-2-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"2 people looking at rocket\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-164448\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/system-project-imua-arliss-2022-2-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/system-project-imua-arliss-2022-2-2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/system-project-imua-arliss-2022-2-2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-164448\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr> student Caleb Yuen with mentor Shidong Kan<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/imua.wcc.hawaii.edu\/\">Project Imua<\/a> is a faculty-student enterprise of multiple <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Community College campuses in affiliation with the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Space Grant Consortium. Project Imua\u2019s primary mission is to experiment with high-powered rocketry and to design and fabricate small payloads for space flight.<\/p>\n<p>For Mission 11, <a href=\"https:\/\/windward.hawaii.edu\/\">Windward <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr><\/a> will launch the team\u2019s rocket at the <abbr>ARLISS<\/abbr> 2022 Come-Back competition. The rocket will contain a land rover designed and assembled by Windward <abbr>CC<\/abbr> that will land by parachute and autonomously make its way back to a predesignated target. An atmospheric detector designed and assembled by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.honolulu.hawaii.edu\/\">Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr><\/a> will collect data during the rocket flight.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"blocklink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/tag\/project-imua\/\">Read more stories from Project Imua<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>During the <abbr>XPRS<\/abbr> event, students <strong>Caleb Yuen<\/strong>, <strong>D\u2019Elle Martin<\/strong> and <strong>Alyson Wirtz<\/strong> and mentors <strong>Shidong Kan<\/strong> and <strong>Helen Rapozo<\/strong> will launch their own custom-built rockets to earn a level 1 <abbr>NAR<\/abbr> certification.
