Festivities in honor of Hawaiian History Month<\/a> this September will spotlight social justice and reconciliation of historical and cultural wrongs in Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>. The month-long celebration spearheaded by the Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Ponoʻī<\/span> Coalition<\/a> in collaboration with the University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa Â鶹´«Ã½nuiākea<\/span> School of Hawaiian Knowledge<\/a> will be held both online and in-person and commences on Friday, September 2, in honor of Queen Liliʻuokalani<\/span>\u2019s 184th birthday.<\/p>\n

A virtual celebration in observation of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s last reigning monarch will be live-streamed at 9 a.m.<\/a> featuring mele (songs) and hula. An in-person walking tour and concert will also be held at 4 p.m. Events will continue with a five-week virtual series<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Malia Nobrega<\/strong>, director of strategic partnerships at Â鶹´«Ã½nuiākea<\/span> helped organize events and is also spearheading He ʻ\u014clelo Ola: ʻAha K\u016bk\u0101 ʻ\u014clelo Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span><\/a><\/em>, a two-day Hawaiian language conference part of the International Decade of Indigenous Languages which will kick off following Friday morning\u2019s opening ceremony. The virtual event<\/a> will feature a variety of panel discussions regarding the current state and future of ʻ\u014dlelo Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> (Hawaiian language) in four fields; education, traditional food systems, digital empowerment and traditional systems of medicine.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, September 4, the public is invited to the premiere of theatrical play, Ke Kau\u0101 O Ka L\u0101hui: The Life of Prince Jonah K\u016bhi\u014d Kalanianaʻole<\/span><\/em>. Directed by Sammie Choy<\/strong>, a theatre and acting lecturer at Kapiʻolani<\/span> Community College and UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa, the play celebrates the royal prince\u2019s life and many accomplishments that shaped Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> from county governments, Hawaiian Civic Clubs to the Hawaiian Home\u2019s Commission Act. Live music will precede the free performance at 3:30 p.m. on the lawn at ʻIolani Palace. Encore performances will also be held on September 5, 10 and 11.<\/p>\n
