The ultimate goal of this project is to test the capabilities of the lasers at various distances and light conditions and to determine the plant\u2019s sensitivity to different concentrations of heavy metals.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_164157\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-164157\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/manoa-soest-haley-currier-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"girl smiling by manoa sign\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-164157\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/manoa-soest-haley-currier-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/manoa-soest-haley-currier-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/manoa-soest-haley-currier.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-164157\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Haley Currier<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <abbr>UROP<\/abbr> project grew out of Currier\u2019s prior experience assisting Truax with her research on heavy metal detection in moss using Laser-Induced-Fluorescence (<abbr>LIF<\/abbr>). Currier helped run experiments and collect data, performed computer coding, and eventually created a poster that she presented at the <a href=\"https:\/\/mtv.engin.umich.edu\/\">Consortium for Monitoring Technology, and Verification<\/a> (<abbr>MTV<\/abbr>) conference in Michigan.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>MTV<\/abbr> is a consortium of 14 universities, including <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa, and 13 national laboratories whose mission is to develop new technologies that detect and deter nuclear proliferation activities and to train the next generation of nuclear professionals.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Learning about the work that Kelly has done using <abbr>LIF<\/abbr> and getting to work alongside her have been my favorite parts of my job,&rdquo; said Currier. &ldquo;Presenting at the <abbr>MTV<\/abbr> conference was one of the most rewarding moments of our research&#8212;and my life! Never did I believe that I\u2019d be able to work with such a great group of people and learn so much at the same time.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Originally from San Clemente, California, Currier said, &ldquo;Growing up, I collected and studied rocks from my backyard and my love for nature only grew with time.
