When the electrical interconnection is completed in December 2022, the <abbr>PV<\/abbr> system will generate over 4-million kilowatt-hours per year (<abbr>kWh\/yr<\/abbr>) of electricity, enough to power 1,000 homes or 300,000 laptops a year. The <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa campus uses an average of about 120-million <abbr>kWh\/yr<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/manoa-pv-parking-canopy-3-1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"parking structure inside\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-164394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/manoa-pv-parking-canopy-3-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/manoa-pv-parking-canopy-3-1-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/manoa-pv-parking-canopy-3-1.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The project is one of the largest monolithic parking structure <abbr>PV<\/abbr> arrays in the nation and is the latest project helping the 10-campus system reach its goal of net-zero energy by 2035. Net-zero energy is when you generate as much energy as you consume.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This project is proof of our commitment to our net-zero energy goal,&rdquo; said <strong>Jan Gouveia<\/strong>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> vice president for administration, who oversees the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/sustainability\/\">Office of Sustainability<\/a>. &ldquo;It will provide clean, green energy and save money while also showing our students and the people of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> that the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> is doing the work needed to save our planet.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"blocklink\">Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2019\/05\/10\/first-half-pv-canopy-almost-complete\/\">First half of <abbr>PV<\/abbr> parking canopy project almost complete<\/a>, May 10, 2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Over a 20-year period, the entire project is expected to save between &#36;11 million to &#36;18 million, depending on future energy costs. The arrays have 8,110 modules spanning more than 178,000 square feet and provide shade for cars and pedestrians on the parking structure.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The addition of photovoltaic systems represents our institutional value of sustainability,&rdquo; said <strong>Miles Topping<\/strong>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> director of energy management. &ldquo;This project is one of many sustainability initiatives that will help <abbr>UH<\/abbr> continue to reach its energy goals. It&#8217;s the right thing to do, not just for <abbr>UH<\/abbr> or <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, but for our planet and our children and our children\u2019s children, and so on.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The parking structure <abbr>PV<\/abbr> array is one of many at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> that are either underway or in the planning stages. The next projects for the Office of Sustainability include adding more <abbr>PV<\/abbr> installations to existing surface lots on the M&#257;noa campus and installing more energy-efficient <abbr>LED<\/abbr> lighting.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/manoa-pv-parking-canopy-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"people walking outside of parking\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-163986\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/manoa-pv-parking-canopy-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/manoa-pv-parking-canopy-2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/manoa-pv-parking-canopy-2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The parking structure project was constructed in two phases to minimize the impact to the campus community with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/sustainability\/pv_system\/manoa-parking-structure-phase-2\/\">first phase<\/a> completed in September 2019.
