About 100 faculty and staff observed the protocol to help usher in the fall 2022 semester and celebrate the naming of the Great Lawn, Makahiapo, which means first-born child.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/kapiolani-great-lawn-3-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"person touching roc\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-163921\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/kapiolani-great-lawn-3-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/kapiolani-great-lawn-3-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/kapiolani-great-lawn-3.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The sprawling lawn is at the center of the campus and is the backdrop for a wide array of events held at the college. <strong><span aria-label=\"Nawaa\">N&#257;wa&#699;a<\/span> Napoleon<\/strong>, dean of arts and sciences at <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> organized the special ceremony alongside members of the college\u2019s Native Hawaiian council, <a href=\"https:\/\/ohana.kapiolani.hawaii.edu\/authorized-governance-organizations\/kalaualani\/\"><span aria-label=\"Aha\">&#699;Aha<\/span> Kal&#257;ualani<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The Great Lawn has been named the most cherished place on campus when we did a long range development plan in 2010. We felt it was the time to honor it, give it a name and use the occasion to bring the faculty and staff back together again,&rdquo; <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> Chancellor <strong>Louise Pagotto<\/strong> said. &ldquo;What we want is to also integrate Hawaiian values into our daily operations on the campus, and this occasion marked how that can be done.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/kapiolani-great-lawn-4-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"person touching rock\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-163922\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/kapiolani-great-lawn-4-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/kapiolani-great-lawn-4-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/kapiolani-great-lawn-4.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To help convey a deeper symbolism to the meaning behind the lawn\u2019s new name, organizers identified 15 faculty and staff members who are makahiapo or first-borns in their <span aria-label=\"ohana\">&#699;ohana<\/span> to take part in a special portion of the ceremony. Each person selected represented one of the 15 <span aria-label=\"kaananiau\">ka&#699;&#257;nani&#699;au<\/span> (traditional name for <span aria-label=\"ahupuaa\">ahupua&#699;a<\/span> or land division on <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu)<\/span> within the moku (district) of Kona where <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> sits. The water, collected from ua (rain) or p&#363;n&#257;wai (water spring) of each <span aria-label=\"kaananiau,\">ka&#699;&#257;nani&#699;au,<\/span> was carried in <span aria-label=\"ohe\">&#699;ohe<\/span> (bamboo) which embodies the Hawaiian god K&#257;ne.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The fact that I was still part of today and I am here and my colleagues are so uplifting and it just makes me want to start the semester,&rdquo; said Burke, a hospitality and tourism professor. &ldquo;I just can\u2019t wait for the students to come back and share the positive energy that has begun today.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Part of the ceremony also paid homage to Pagotto who will retire this December after a 33-year-long career at <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>. Faculty and staff chanted to the respected scholar while they adorned her with lei.<\/p>\n<p>In 2015, Pagotto advocated to have a handbook created to help <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> students, faculty and staff connect with the campus\u2019 cultural roots and history.
