Burns School of Medicine<\/a> (JABSOM) <a href=\"https:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/departments\/dnhh\/\">Department of Native Hawaiian Health<\/a> launched <a href=\"https:\/\/kwaahila.org\">Ka Malu a <span aria-label=\"Waahila\">Wa&#699;ahila<\/span><\/a>. The program is free to students and was developed at the request of the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <span aria-label=\"KUalii\">K&#363;ali&#699;i<\/span> Native Hawaiian Advisory Council and funded by the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Office of the Provost.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This is an important service being provided to our k\u0101naka maoli (Native Hawaiian) students and I commend the <span aria-label=\"Waahila\">Wa&#699;ahila<\/span> program and <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>, our school of medicine, for stepping up and meeting this challenge. We need to support all of our student needs so they are able to focus on their studies and this program will provide an invaluable service,&rdquo; said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Provost <strong>Michael Bruno<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Services available<\/h2>\n<p>Students have access to individual therapy services, monthly k\u016bk\u0101k\u016bk\u0101 (discussion) group support sessions, and additional tools for self-help and resiliency via the program\u2019s website and social media platforms. <\/p>\n<p>Students from across the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> system also have access to the <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/us\/app\/myhealthstory-2\/id1613851136\">MyHealthStory2 app<\/a>, a video-based digital platform designed to capture student experiences relating to mental health. The interactive app was developed in partnership with HealthTechApps, a Native Hawaiian-owned and-operated tech startup founded through the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Innovation Center.<\/p>\n<p>Ka Malu a <span aria-label=\"Waahila\">Wa&#699;ahila<\/span>\u2019s mission is to foster a safe, therapeutic space for k\u0101naka maoli students, faculty and staff born from the acknowledgment of historical and intergenerational trauma, to cultivate healing pathways that elevate the behavioral health of the l\u0101hui (Hawaiian Nation).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur haum\u0101na (students) deserve the highest quality support without having to explain the gravity of their collective historical traumas and histories,\u201d said <strong>Jillian Freitas<\/strong>, program director of Ka Malu a <span aria-label=\"Waahila\">Wa&#699;ahila<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Freitas said the mental health resources are provided by professionals who can connect with students on various levels.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Our clinicians not only are licensed mental health professionals, but also have lived experiences as Pacific Islanders, and participate in ongoing training in providing culturally safe, responsive and reflexive behavioral health services for our k\u0101naka maoli community.
