As the president and <abbr title=\"Chief Executive Officer\">CEO<\/abbr> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.proservice.com\/\">ProService Hawaii<\/a>, one of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s largest outsourced human resource providers, he counts more than 2,000 local small businesses as clients&#8212;most of them entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s one of the reasons Godsey and his wife, Yvonne Chan, are investing in the <a href=\"https:\/\/pace.shidler.hawaii.edu\/rise\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s Residences for Innovative Student Entrepreneurs<\/a> (<abbr>RISE<\/abbr>) with a $250,000 gift for the live-work-study facility being built to encourage student entrepreneurs to dream big and turn those dreams into successful businesses.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_163891\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-163891\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/manoa-shidler-rise-clean-maker-space-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"rendering of people in a room next to desks and tools\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-163891\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/manoa-shidler-rise-clean-maker-space-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/manoa-shidler-rise-clean-maker-space-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/manoa-shidler-rise-clean-maker-space.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-163891\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rendering of the <abbr>RISE<\/abbr> clean maker space (Courtesy: Hunt Companies)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> is run by small businesses&#8212;and small business is entrepreneurship, whether it&#8217;s a brand-new business, or it&#8217;s a business that&#8217;s been around for 50 or 100 years,&rdquo; Godsey said. &ldquo;Entrepreneurship and small business are at the heart of making <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> a more livable place.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The $70 million <abbr>RISE<\/abbr> project&#8212;expected to open fall 2023&#8212;is being built on the site of the former Atherton <abbr title=\"Young Men's Christian Association\">YMCA<\/abbr>, across from the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa campus, under a public-private partnership between the university, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Foundation and Hunt Companies, with no taxpayer dollars spent. The <abbr>RISE<\/abbr> programs will be operated by the <a href=\"https:\/\/pace.shidler.hawaii.edu\/\">Pacific Asian Center for Entrepreneurship<\/a> (<abbr>PACE<\/abbr>) at the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/shidler.hawaii.edu\/\">Shidler College of Business<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/tag\/pacific-asian-center-for-entrepreneurship\/\">Read more <em><abbr>UH<\/abbr> News<\/em> stories about <abbr>PACE<\/abbr>.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All <abbr>RISE<\/abbr> residents will be encouraged to participate in <abbr>PACE<\/abbr> programs, setting up the center to play a huge role in the success of the <abbr>RISE<\/abbr> facility, said Godsey, who is also chairman of the <abbr>PACE<\/abbr> board of directors.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;What&#8217;s exciting about the <abbr>RISE<\/abbr> project is that with the new building comes new opportunities for enhanced programs and greater learning and education,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;It&#8217;s really going to be fantastic.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Game-changing clean maker space<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_163892\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-163892\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/manoa-shidler-pace-rose-wong-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"person standing in a room\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-163892\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/manoa-shidler-pace-rose-wong-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/manoa-shidler-pace-rose-wong-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/manoa-shidler-pace-rose-wong.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-163892\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rose Wong<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>One unique aspect of <abbr>RISE<\/abbr> is that the 374 residents in the six-story, 114,000-square-foot <abbr>RISE<\/abbr> building will have access to <abbr>PACE<\/abbr>\u2019s classroom and co-working spaces, meeting areas, maker spaces and prototyping labs with high-tech equipment, all without having to leave the building. The gift from Godsey and Chan will name the clean maker space at <abbr>RISE<\/abbr>, where students will be able to make and test their products.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This project will truly be a game changer in the entrepreneurship community,&rdquo; said Shidler and <abbr>PACE<\/abbr> alumna <strong>Rose Wong<\/strong>, founder and owner of <a href=\"https:\/\/shopkolohe.com\/\">Kolohe<\/a>, a <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> brand that specializes in a Custom Jewelry Bar at its store locations. &ldquo;A facility like this would have definitely accelerated my business even more.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr>RISE<\/abbr> space will be ideal for student entrepreneurs like Wong, who started her business in high school at age 16 and worked to grow it through the <abbr>PACE<\/abbr> program while a student at <abbr>UH<\/abbr>.
