The educational administration major captivates audiences with heartfelt rap compositions. His latest recording, <em>The West Above All<\/em>, captured a N\u0101 H\u014dk\u016b Hanohano Award for Hip Hop Album of the Year in July. This summer\u2019s 45th annual awards ceremony, hosted by the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Academy of Recording Arts, marked the third time the hip hop artist landed an award for a solo album.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;My music is used as a tool to stand against anything that is harmful to <span aria-label=\"aina\">&#699;&#257;ina<\/span> (land, water or the planet),&rdquo; Punahele expressed. &ldquo;As a Native Hawaiian from M\u0101kaha, I also want my music to heal and uplift my culture and community.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_163260\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-163260\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/manoa-punahele-kutzen-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"Punahele Kutzen\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-163260\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/manoa-punahele-kutzen-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/manoa-punahele-kutzen-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/manoa-punahele-kutzen.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-163260\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Punahele Kutzen<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Punahele earned his bachelor\u2019s degree in <a href=\"https:\/\/ethnicstudies.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">ethnic studies<\/a> in spring 2022 and plans to graduate with his master\u2019s in spring 2023. The k\u0101naka <span aria-label=\"oiwi\">&#699;&#333;iwi<\/span> (Native Hawaiian) scholar hopes to work with at-risk youth teaching place-based learning alongside poetry and hip hop, all while incorporating Hawaiian cultural practices and <span aria-label=\"olelo\">&#699;&#333;lelo<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> (Hawaiian language).<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> has helped me and my academic career by connecting me with great teachers and colleagues,&rdquo; Punahele said. &ldquo;I am thankful to people like Kumu <strong>Jon Osorio<\/strong>, Kumu <strong><span aria-label=\"Nou\">No&#699;u<\/span> Revilla<\/strong>, Professor <strong>Rod Labrador<\/strong> and Dr. <strong>Ruben Enrique Campos<\/strong> for making me feel like a kid from M\u0101kaha could share my story while uplifting my culture and community through academia.
