The proof-of-concept planning and design services offered by <abbr>UHCDC<\/abbr> provided the State of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\u2019s\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½\u2019s<\/span> Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation (<abbr>DOBOR<\/abbr>) with concept options for the state\u2019s largest harbor for small boats located at the Ala Wai Canal between Waik&#299;k&#299; and Honolulu.<\/p>\n<p>The new design features a multi-modal promenade to connect the coast, watercraft access and community spaces&#8212;for recreation and education&#8212;that can be adapted for the projected sea-level rise due to climate change.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Phoebe White<\/strong>, assistant professor of landscape architecture in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arch.hawaii.edu\/\">School of Architecture<\/a>, and <strong>Priyam Das<\/strong>, associate professor and chair of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning housed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/socialsciences.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Social Sciences<\/a>, served as the faculty principal investigators and assembled a team.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_163653\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-163653\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/manoa-architecture-ala-wai-harbor-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"renderings of ala wai harbor design\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-163653\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/manoa-architecture-ala-wai-harbor-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/manoa-architecture-ala-wai-harbor-2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/manoa-architecture-ala-wai-harbor-2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-163653\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Photo credit: <abbr>UHCDC<\/abbr>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The collaborative team included: <strong>Ariel Dungca<\/strong>, project designer at <abbr>UHCDC<\/abbr>; <strong>Hana Fulghum<\/strong>, a master of landscape architecture student; <strong>Sukhyun Hong<\/strong>, a bachelor of environmental design student; and <strong>Sandy Jiyoon Kim<\/strong>, a <abbr title=\"doctor of philosophy\">PhD<\/abbr> student in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning.<\/p>\n<p>The vision plan includes harbor amenities such as a fuel dock, pump out, small watercraft storage, a convenience store, laundry area, cafe and lounge, public comfort stations and more. The team designed the space with the intention of making the harbor more inviting for its users.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The project demonstrates how the university can contribute to public interest projects, in this case, by envisioning culturally and ecologically resilient public spaces in anticipation of the effects of climate change such as sea-level rise,&rdquo; said White.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/tag\/manoa-sustainability\/\">See more <em><abbr>UH<\/abbr> News<\/em> stories on M&#257;noa sustainability<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Stakeholder input was central in the design development.
