(Photo credit: Nick Bauer)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/unit\/com-pf\">U.S. Pacific Fleet<\/a> (<abbr>COMPACFLT<\/abbr>) completed its first summer paid internship program with midshipmen from the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa\u2019s newly established <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/undergrad\/navalscience\/\">Navy Reserve Officer Training Corps<\/a> (<abbr>NROTC<\/abbr>).<\/p>\n<p>The two-month pilot program provided eleven midshipmen the opportunity to join the Pacific Fleet headquarters command as full staff members for the summer and gain broad experience in the naval services\u2019 role in the Indo-Pacific.<\/p>\n<p>The training included embarking on various naval platforms, including overnight embarks aboard <abbr title=\"united states ship\">USS<\/abbr> <em>Abraham Lincoln<\/em> and amphibious assault ship <abbr>USS<\/abbr> <em>Essex<\/em>, and participating in a familiarization program with the <abbr>U.S.<\/abbr> Marine Corps Forces Pacific (<abbr>MARFORPAC<\/abbr>) during Rim of the Pacific (<abbr>RIMPAC<\/abbr>) 2022. The opportunity gave the midshipmen real-world experience with navies from 26 nations.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?s=nrotc\">Read more <abbr>NROTC<\/abbr> stories on <em>Â鶹´«Ã½News<\/em>.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Adm. Samuel Paparo, commander, <abbr>COMPACFLT<\/abbr>, explained the importance of creating the internship program.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;As <abbr title=\"United States\">U.S.<\/abbr> Pacific Fleet, the Navy\u2019s largest and most expansive fleet is located on <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>, we welcomed the opportunity to work alongside the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>NROTC<\/abbr> to create the paid internship for the midshipmen,&rdquo; said Paparo. &ldquo;These midshipmen are receiving a world-class education and a vast experience working with the Navy\u2019s oldest Fleet headquarters.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>Along with earning qualifications, completing ship simulators, and hands-on training aboard ships, like the guided-missile destroyer <abbr>USS<\/abbr> <em>Daniel Inouye<\/em>, students also completed group capstone projects on increasing amphibious lethality and contested logistics as they prepare for the upcoming semester.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;My favorite event was being able to use an <abbr>MV<\/abbr>-22 simulator, but my most memorable experience was talking to the chiefs on the Essex,&rdquo; said <strong>Kealoha Yamaguchi<\/strong>, a midshipman with the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <abbr>NROTC<\/abbr> unit. &ldquo;Learning about the chiefs\u2019 experiences and knowledge, and what they want us, as future officers, to know going into the fleet.
