As a minority-serving institution, we draw diverse students into higher education, build their skills through our fine faculty and academic partnerships, and send our alumni into professional careers that connect <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and the U.S. to the Pacific and Asia.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/spas\/about\/national-resource-centers\/\">National Resource Center<\/a> (<abbr>NRC<\/abbr>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/eastasia\/flas\/\">Foreign Language and Area Studies<\/a> (<abbr>FLAS<\/abbr>) grants are housed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/spas\/\">School of Pacific and Asian Studies<\/a> (<abbr>SPAS<\/abbr>) in the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/call\/\">College of Arts, Languages, and Letters<\/a> (<abbr>CALL<\/abbr>) at M&#257;noa. <abbr>SPAS<\/abbr> is considered a leader in Pacific Islands studies and Asian studies nationally and internationally. <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa is the only university in the country to be awarded <abbr>NRC<\/abbr>-Pacific Islands and <abbr>FLAS<\/abbr>-Pacific Islands grants.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_163399\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-163399\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/manoa-title-vi-grant-canoe-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"people on canoe\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-163399\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/manoa-title-vi-grant-canoe-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/manoa-title-vi-grant-canoe-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/manoa-title-vi-grant-canoe.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-163399\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Center for Pacific Islands Studies students on Samoan Voyaging Canoe.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <abbr>NRC<\/abbr> grants will support modern language instruction, teacher training, curriculum development, outreach and library collections. <abbr>FLAS<\/abbr> programs fund fellowships for <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa undergraduate and graduate students who are studying modern foreign languages and area studies.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/nflrc.hawaii.edu\/\">National Foreign Language Resource Center<\/a> (<abbr>NFLRC<\/abbr>) grant was first awarded to <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa when the <abbr>NFLRC<\/abbr> program was established in 1990 and has been continuously earned since then, making <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa the oldest language resource center in the nation.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Faculty and staff at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa collaborated across campus and with other campuses to develop innovative projects, e.g. Asia-Pacific Studies Career Readiness Program, the <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Community College Certificate of Community Interpreting, and <abbr>NFLRC<\/abbr> Japanese and Filipino Culture Apps,&rdquo;
