Beginning in the fall 2022 semester, a streamlined pathway to a <abbr>BS<\/abbr> degree in nursing will be available to interested students through a unique partnership between the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> (<abbr>UHWO<\/abbr>) <a href=\"https:\/\/westoahu.hawaii.edu\/academics\/degrees\/applied-science\/health-professions\/\">Bachelor of Applied Science, Health Professions Program<\/a> and the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"http:\/\/nursing.hawaii.edu\">Nancy Atmospera-Walch School of Nursing<\/a> (<abbr>NAWSON<\/abbr>).<\/p>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> students interested in a career in nursing can apply to the new <a href=\"http:\/\/westoahu.hawaii.edu\/prenursing\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> Pre-Nursing Pathway<\/a> that will prepare them for the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <abbr>NAWSON<\/abbr> Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. <\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_162080\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-162080\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/west-oahu-campus-gnrc-2022-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"U H West Oahu campus\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-162080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/west-oahu-campus-gnrc-2022-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/west-oahu-campus-gnrc-2022-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/west-oahu-campus-gnrc-2022.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-162080\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;This new collaborative partnership between <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa will help address <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s nursing workforce shortage,&rdquo; said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> President <strong>David Lassner<\/strong>. &ldquo;By working together across the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> system we can prepare students who live in the rapidly growing West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> region for high-quality jobs that meet a critical state need.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> Pre-Nursing Pathway students will apply to and enroll at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> for three semesters and will physically complete courses at the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> campus. This Pre-Nursing Pathway will fulfill all general education, prerequisite courses, and required courses for the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> Pre-Nursing to <a href=\"https:\/\/nursing.hawaii.edu\/nursing-bachelor\/uhwo-pre-nursing-uhm-bs\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Upon acceptance into the <abbr>NAWSON<\/abbr> Nursing program, students will complete an additional three years (6 semesters) as a <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa student, but will take in-person courses at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>. After completion of the 9-semester program, the student will earn a Bachelor of Science degree from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa.<\/p>\n<h2>Place-based, aina-based learning<\/h2>\n<p>The <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> portion of this pathway will help students gain the foundational science knowledge and practice the clinical skills needed to grow into clinicians and make an impact in the nursing profession and in the health of their community. The program fosters a holistic approach through incorporating Native Hawaiian values and principles, as well as place-based and <span aria-label=\"aina\">&#699;&#257;ina<\/span>-based learning.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This is the first step to becoming a nurse,&rdquo; said <strong>Rebecca Romine<\/strong>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> associate professor of biology and co-lead for the Pre-Nursing Pathway. &ldquo;The <abbr>UHWO<\/abbr> pathway is taught with a unique culture-based perspective in which concepts important to Hawai\u2018i and health within our community are integrated into the coursework.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Courses closer to home<\/h2>\n<p>Pre-Nursing Pathway students will receive extra support from both <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa to ensure student success. Upon acceptance and enrollment into the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa NAWSON Nursing Program, students will transfer their <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> credits and enroll with <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa. But instead of driving to M\u0101noa, students will take courses at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> to reduce travel and receive instruction closer to their home communities.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Our faculty are committed to providing world-class nursing education and&#8230;bring our M\u0101noa nursing education to <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span><br \/> &#8212;Clementina Ceria-Ulep<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&ldquo;Our faculty are committed to providing world-class nursing education and in an effort to increase access to education&#8212;our faculty will bring our M\u0101noa nursing education to <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>,&rdquo; said <strong>Clementina Ceria-Ulep<\/strong>, <abbr>NAWSON<\/abbr> interim dean. &ldquo;This is an innovative and cost-efficient solution focused on cultivating student success and meeting workforce demands, which aligns with <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s mission. Our hope is that nurses who graduate from this pathway will remain in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and serve in their home communities, which will increase access to healthcare for the people of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>\u2019s <strong>Nicole Akana<\/strong>, program coordinator for the Kumu Ola Health Careers Opportunity Program Summer Bridge and co-lead for the Pre-Nursing Pathway, said the new pathway allows accessibility to a much needed nursing program in the community. &ldquo;With Kapolei being the fastest growing region, so are the increased demands for healthcare. Thus, educating and training students to become registered nurses is a crucial goal for our community,&rdquo; she said. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This Pre-Nursing Pathway provides students, in our region, access to a first-rate program that will both strengthen our nursing workforce and graduate nurses committed to service in their home communities,&rdquo; said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> Chancellor <strong>Maenette Benham<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Apply today for the inaugural cohort<\/h2>\n<p>The <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> Pre-Nursing Pathway is ideal for recent high school graduates and first-time college students interested in healthcare and nursing. The first cohort of the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> Pre-Nursing Pathway will start in August 2022.
