I’m really honored and really excited. Here in the state, there is a physician shortage, especially on the other islands, the more rural areas…so just growing up and then being able to experience that, it really inspired me to come back. Being able to be here right now, to be able to have the opportunity to give back, give these rural areas more resources, be a resource for them. I think that’s a dream come true.”

Carino, a Pearl City native, was inspired by the doctor who took care of his father, who survived a heart attack. The care that his father received inspired him to take a leap into medicine and to give back to his community as well.

“It’s a crazy feeling,” Carino said. “[The white coat] is a symbol of the long path, the long journey and to be able to practice and become a doctor in my home state and take care of my community that helped raise me.
