Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-cell therapy (<abbr>CAR<\/abbr> T-cell therapy) can result in the development of life-saving treatments for cancers that are difficult to treat.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_162364\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-162364\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/manoa-cancer-center-lim-si-214x300.jpeg\" alt=\"si lim with boy throwing shakas\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-162364\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/manoa-cancer-center-lim-si-214x300.jpeg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/manoa-cancer-center-lim-si-93x130.jpeg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/manoa-cancer-center-lim-si.jpeg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-162364\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Si Lim and a patient with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia \u2013 <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Medical Center for Women &#38; Children.<br \/><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Si Lim is leading the initiative at <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Medical Center for Women &#38; Children&#8212;part of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Pacific Health&#8212;to build a broader cellular immunotherapy program. A key goal of the program is to introduce <abbr>CAR<\/abbr> T-cell therapy to the medical community in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> in the form of clinical trials and <abbr title=\"United States\">U.S.<\/abbr> <abbr>FDA<\/abbr> (Food and Drug Administration) approved products. This will ensure that patients have access to the best available treatments for cancer.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>CAR<\/abbr> T-cell therapy is now available to children and young adults with non-Hodgkin lymphoma and B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and will soon be available to adult patients. <\/p>\n<p>The first <abbr>CAR<\/abbr> T-cell clinical trial opened on May 14, 2022, at <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Medical Center for Women &#38; Children, leveraging the infrastructure and expertise of the hospital\u2019s stem cell transplant and clinical research programs. Moving forward, all patients living in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, including the neighbor islands who qualify for this clinical trial, will be able to receive treatment on <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> without having to travel to the continental <abbr>U.S.<\/abbr><\/p>\n<p>Si Lim said, &ldquo;We are so excited to be able to offer <abbr>CAR<\/abbr> T-cell therapy to our patients here in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>. This is a momentous step for our medical community as we continue to strive to offer the best and most cutting-edge therapies to patients in need.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Currently, <abbr>CAR<\/abbr> T-cell therapy is proven to be particularly effective against B-cell malignancies and multiple myeloma\u2014both common forms of cancer in adults and pediatric populations in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>.
