Keawe Lopes, Jr.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Associate Professor <strong>Keawe Lopes<\/strong>, who is the director of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kawaihonaakealoha.org\/\">Ka Waihona A Ke Aloha<\/a> and <abbr>KCHL<\/abbr> of <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/hshk\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaiinuiakea\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½nui&#257;kea<\/span> School of Hawaiian Knowledge<\/a> (<abbr>HSHK<\/abbr>), formed the troupe that is made up of students, alumni and faculty. While recording the album, Lopes required student members to concurrently complete the department\u2019s haku mele (song composition) course at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa, which is formed around broadening language acquisition through learning traditional mele (songs) composed by m&#257;naleo (native speakers).<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Learning the songs&#8230;learning the meanings&#8230;learning how to build upon those kinds of poetic expressions [of] our k&#363;puna allows them to further develop their language skills,&rdquo; Lopes explained.<\/p>\n<p>From lyric composing to recording, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Hawaiian language student <strong>Taisamasama Kaiminaauao-Eteuati<\/strong> is still mesmerized that he was given an opportunity to deepen his connection to <span aria-label=\"olelo\">&#699;&#333;lelo<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We could write the song, understand the language and then go to kumu and get corrected and then come here [recording studio] and relate all of those <span aria-label=\"manao\">mana&#699;o<\/span> (thoughts) all of these old inoas (names) now into a recording,&rdquo; he explained.<\/p>\n<h2>N&#257; H&#333;k&#363; nominations<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_162115\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-162115\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/manoa-kchl-tuahine-troupe-studio-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-162115\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/manoa-kchl-tuahine-troupe-studio-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/manoa-kchl-tuahine-troupe-studio-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/manoa-kchl-tuahine-troupe-studio.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-162115\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Troupe members record tracks in new studio at Spalding Hall.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Tuahine Troupe earned eight N&#257; H&#333;k&#363; Hanohano nominations for Album of the Year, Group of the Year, Most Promising Artist, Hawaiian Music Album, Favorite Entertainer, Graphics, Haku Mele and Hawaiian Language Performance.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Now that we have the eight nominations, &lsquo;I [thought] that\u2019s amazing!&rsquo;&#8230;the project came out so well and we\u2019re so proud of it, [so to have that recognition is truly an honor]&rdquo; said troupe member <strong><span aria-label=\"Kaiulani\">Ka&#699;iulani<\/span> Kanehailua<\/strong>, an educational specialist at <abbr>HSHK<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<p>The <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Academy of Recording Arts hosts the annual N&#257; H&#333;k&#363; Hanohano Awards and invited the group to perform in the ceremony\u2019s opening number. The awards show will air live on K5 on Wednesday, July 20 at 7 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Four of the 14 songs featured on the troupe\u2019s album, Ke&#257;iwaokulamanu,  are original compositions written by band members. The album also showcases four mele (songs) penned by Lopes and a track co-composed by Lopes and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa alumnus <strong>Zachary Lum<\/strong>, an award winning musician who earned his <abbr title=\"master of arts\">MA<\/abbr> in ethnomusicology. The troupe recorded five cover songs originally composed by k&#363;puna (elders) Julia Walanika, J. K. Kamali, Bina Mossman, John K. Almeida and Kimo Alama Keaulana.<\/p>\n<p>A majority of the tracks were recorded inside a new fully equipped recording studio in Spalding Hall at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa. The studio features a control room and professional software and equipment. During the recording process, Kaiminaauao-Eteuati shadowed award-winning sound engineer Michael Grande who helped produce the album.<\/p>\n<h2>Welina M&#257;noa (Greetings to you, M&#257;noa)<\/h2>\n<p>The troupe opted to pay homage to the <span aria-label=\"aina\">&#699;&#257;ina<\/span> (land) of M&#257;noa where the sprawling university campus sits. The essence can even be found in the troupe\u2019s name, tuahine, which is a traditional name used to identify a particular gentle rain that falls in the valley. Every track on the album is either written about the area or by a composer who lived in M&#257;noa Valley.<\/p>\n<p>The voices of longtime M&#257;noa residents Aunty Mona Teves and her daughter Noelani Whittington are spotlighted on the track Rain Tuahine o M&#257;noa, which was composed by their t&#363;t&#363;. Keaulana also grew up in the lush valley and can be heard singing with the troupe on track Nani M&#257;noa, his own composition.
