{"id":161913,"date":"2022-07-12T15:00:19","date_gmt":"2022-07-13T01:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=161913"},"modified":"2022-07-12T15:04:09","modified_gmt":"2022-07-13T01:04:09","slug":"uh-hilo-reaccreditation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2022\/07\/12\/uh-hilo-reaccreditation\/","title":{"rendered":"<abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo receives reaccreditation for six years"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/hilo-gnrc-sign.jpg\" alt=\"U H Hilo sign\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-143774\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/hilo-gnrc-sign.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/hilo-gnrc-sign-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/hilo-gnrc-sign-130x73.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at Hilo<\/a> was recently reaffirmed for six years of accreditation by the Senior College and University Commission of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (<abbr>WSCUC<\/abbr>).<\/p>\n<p>A review team visited the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Hilo campus for an Accreditation Visit April 5&#8211;8, 2022 and recommended to grant the university accreditation through 2028, with a special visit in spring 2024, an offsite review due in fall 2027, and an accreditation visit in spring 2028.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I appreciate the time and care that the visiting team took with this review, and I am happy they recognized some core strengths of our campus, which we seek to build on in the strategic plan,&rdquo; Chancellor <strong>Bonnie Irwin<\/strong> said.<\/p>\n<p>The Commission noted several areas for special recognition, among them:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo\u2019s strong sense of place<\/li>\n<li>Commitment as a community to renormalize and promote the study of indigenous languages and cultures through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olelo.hawaii.edu\/khuok\/\">Ka Haka <span aria-label=\"Ula\">&#699;Ula<\/span> O <span aria-label=\"Keelikolani\">Ke&#699;elik&#333;lani<\/span> College of Hawaiian Language<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Building and maintaining strong programmatic connections to the community<\/li>\n<li>Emphasis on high-impact practices, including service learning<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Commission also included in its report eight recommendations that were made by the review team related to shared governance, assessment of student learning, program review, use of data-informed decision making, enrollment management, and financial planning. A Formal Notice of Concern was issued to underscore the urgency by which the eight areas need to be addressed by 2028.
