  {"id":161777,"date":"2022-07-08T15:15:49","date_gmt":"2022-07-09T01:15:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=161777"},"modified":"2022-07-08T15:15:49","modified_gmt":"2022-07-09T01:15:49","slug":"bor-evaluates-lassner-identifies-priorities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2022\/07\/08\/bor-evaluates-lassner-identifies-priorities\/","title":{"rendered":"<abbr>BOR<\/abbr> evaluates President Lassner, identifies priorities for coming year"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/lassner-8-2017.jpg\" alt=\"David Lassner\" width=\"676\" height=\"380\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-64187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/lassner-8-2017.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/lassner-8-2017-260x146.jpg 260w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/lassner-8-2017-630x353.jpg 630w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/offices\/bor\/\">Board of Regents<\/a> (<abbr>BOR<\/abbr>) gave <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> President <strong>David Lassner<\/strong> a passing grade and list of priorities for the coming year (July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2023) in his annual review at a <abbr>BOR<\/abbr> special meeting on July 7, 2022.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I think we are generally pleased with the results of where we\u2019ve been and where we\u2019re going,&rdquo; said <abbr>BOR<\/abbr> Chair <strong>Randy Moore<\/strong> after he identified the challenges and accomplishments of the last year for the 10-campus <abbr>UH<\/abbr> System under Lassner\u2019s leadership. Moore also noted the difficulty of the position responsible for the state\u2019s public higher education system with an estimated 45,000 students, 9,000 employees and $1 billion annual budget.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The challenge for the president is that the regents generally think the president of the university is moving too slowly, and the internal faculty and staff sometimes think the president is trying to move too fast,&rdquo; Moore said. &ldquo;So that\u2019s a balancing act.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr>BOR<\/abbr> outlined the following as priorities for Lassner for the upcoming year noting that work on many of the items has already begun:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The development of a new strategic plan to implement the vision for the university (underway)<\/li>\n<li>Clarifying and simplifying faculty classifications (underway)<\/li>\n<li>Better land and facilities management and utilization (ongoing)<\/li>\n<li>The development of common general education requirements (underway)<\/li>\n<li>Succession planning for administrative leadership<\/li>\n<li>Improving the relationship between <abbr>UH<\/abbr> and the state legislature<\/li>\n<li>Addressing declining enrollment in the community colleges<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The challenges listed by Moore for the previous year included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic<\/li>\n<li>Maintaining a focus on improving the way we do things<\/li>\n<li>Legislative issues including Maunakea management, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> football, faculty tenure, state budget appropriation and the lack of funds to expand the Ching Athletics Complex field to meet <abbr>NCAA<\/abbr> fan attendance requirements<\/li>\n<li>Attracting fewer high school graduates to enroll<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Previous year accomplishments included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Rebuilding financial reserves<\/li>\n<li>Hiring <strong>Timmy Chang<\/strong> as the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> head football coach<\/li>\n<li>Savings and efficiencies being realized by the gradual reorganization of <abbr>UH<\/abbr> and the M\u0101noa campus<\/li>\n<li>The personnel freeze that enabled resources to be gradually shifted to areas of higher priority<\/li>\n<li>The successful merger of the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> P&#8211;20 and career and technical education offices<\/li>\n<li>Expanded online degree programs, especially at the community colleges and for non-traditional students<\/li>\n<li>Increased enrollment at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa<\/li>\n<li>Enrollment decline at other <abbr>UH<\/abbr> campuses is not as steep as the national average<\/li>\n<li>Increase in research extramural funding and philanthropy monies raised<\/li>\n<li>The president\u2019s strong administrative team<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Moore also commended the entire <abbr>UH<\/abbr> community for navigating and responding to the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<abbr>UH<\/abbr> handled the pandemic better than almost anyone in the state, and with little drama,&rdquo; said Moore. &ldquo;The faculty, the staff, the students are all to be commended on rising to the unprecedented challenges posed by the pandemic.&rdquo;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&ldquo;I think we are generally pleased with the results of where we\u2019ve been and where we\u2019re going,&rdquo;&#8212;Chair Randy Moore<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":16,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1193],"tags":[72,394,947],"class_list":["post-161777","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-administrative","tag-board-of-regents","tag-presidents-office","tag-uh-system","entry","has-media"],"aioseo_notices":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/161777","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/16"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=161777"}],"version-history":[{"count":3,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/161777\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":161802,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/161777\/revisions\/161802"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=161777"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=161777"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=161777"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
