I\u2019ve been here before. I feel comfortable,&rsquo;&rdquo; said <strong>Kinohi Gomes<\/strong>, director at <abbr>NPN<\/abbr> <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>NPN<\/abbr> immerses haum\u0101na in daily cultural protocol such as hula, oli (chant) and activities grounded in m\u0101lama &#699;\u0101ina (caring for the land). Students are also teamed up with STEM majors at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> who mentor them in educational hands-on activities, such as robotics, computer building and coding.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It\u2019s all about bridging the past with the present, and what we want to be able to do is, along with providing students with a nice cultural foundation, to let them know that they can proceed and interweave technology as a proud Hawaiian in whatever educational and career pathways that they want to pursue,&rdquo; Gomes explained.<\/p>\n<h2><span aria-label=\"Kupaa\">K&#363;pa&#699;a<\/span> ma hope o ka &#699;\u0101ina: Ever loyal to the land and Native Hawaiian resiliency<\/h2>\n<p>18-year-old Deion <span aria-label=\"Pea\">Pe&#699;a<\/span>-Whitney is one of the eager student participants this summer. The <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Island native recently graduated from Ke Kula &#699;o <span aria-label=\"Nawahiokalaniopuu\">N&#257;wah&#299;okalani&#699;&#333;pu&#699;u<\/span>, a Hawaiian language immersion charter school, and would like to pursue electrical engineering at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;He kanaka hana &#699;\u0101ina wau, no laila, no <span aria-label=\"kou\">ko&#699;u<\/span> mau lima he <span aria-label=\"ano\">&#699;ano<\/span> ikaika. No k&#275;ia papa, ua <span aria-label=\"ao\">a&#699;o<\/span> wau e pili ana i ka palekana, ka <span aria-label=\"hoomanawa\">ho&#699;omanawa<\/span> nui me ka <span aria-label=\"enehana\">&#699;enehana<\/span>. (I usually work with the &#699;\u0101ina, and it requires a lot of strength in my hands. Today, I learned how I have to be fragile since this is technology. It could easily break.
