The 40-foot aluminum-hulled catamaran workboat will be converted into a research vessel for science and engineering and will support marine education and outreach.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, the vessel was renamed <em>Kaun&#257;n&#257;<\/em> (meaning &ldquo;to discover&rdquo;)in consultation with <strong>Puakea Nogelmeier<\/strong>, professor emeritus of Hawaiian language at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa. Kumu Keola Kalani, cultural practitioner and teacher of Hawaiian studies and fine arts at <span aria-label=\"Aiea\">&#699;Aiea<\/span> High School, performed a Hawaiian blessing in June at the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Marine Center.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;In renaming the boat, we wanted to invoke the theme of &lsquo;discovery&rsquo; so, with Puakea\u2019s guidance we selected the name R\/V <em>Kaun&#257;n&#257;<\/em>,&rdquo; said <strong>Chip Fletcher<\/strong>, interim dean of the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/soestwp\/\">School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/a>, whose faculty and students will be among the primary users of the vessel.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_161030\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-161030\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/manoa-soest-kaunana-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"boat\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-161030\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/manoa-soest-kaunana-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/manoa-soest-kaunana-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/manoa-soest-kaunana.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-161030\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><abbr>R\/V<\/abbr> Kaun&#257;n&#257;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Marine Center personnel are working to return the vessel to service. Soon the team will drydock and repaint the vessel with the hull being &ldquo;<abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Green.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Once renovations are complete, R\/V <em>Kaun&#257;n&#257;<\/em> will begin operating throughout the main Hawaiian Islands supporting coastal research.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;There is great interest in the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> research community in using the vessel for this purpose and we are beginning the transformation of the ship into a research platform,&rdquo; said <strong>Anita L.
