The final results from the April 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/spacegrant.carthage.edu\/first-nations-launch\/\">First Nations Launch High-Power Rocket Competition<\/a> \u200b\u200bat the Richard Bong State Recreational Area in Kansasville, Wisconsin, were announced in June.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/manoa-engineering-first-nations-rocket-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"three people standing next to a rocket\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-160992\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/manoa-engineering-first-nations-rocket-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/manoa-engineering-first-nations-rocket-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/manoa-engineering-first-nations-rocket.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa team entered the Moon Challenge phase of the competition. It captured 1st place for oral presentation, and third place for the grand prize award and written report. <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa also won the spirit award and aesthetic award.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from reaching a height of 3,000 feet, participants of the Moon Challenge were required to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Design and construct a dual deploy high-power rocket with a <abbr title=\"Global Positioning System\">GPS<\/abbr> data logger onboard<\/li>\n<li>Maintain a stable flight<\/li>\n<li>Reconstruct a <abbr title=\"3 Dimensional\">3D<\/abbr> trajectory of the rocket flight from the data collected from liftoff until landing, and plot it against a satellite imagery map<\/li>\n<li>Satisfy all technical requirements for the rocket<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;I&#8217;m very happy and proud of the team&#8217;s accomplishments. Our team started off not knowing each other at all, but in the short time we had to complete the work for the competition, we hit it really hard and the team&#8217;s dedication and hard work can be seen through every step from design, to build, to presentations and our papers that we dedicated a lot of late nights to writing,&rdquo; said <strong>Nikki Arakawa<\/strong>, team member and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa senior <a href=\"https:\/\/ee.hawaii.edu\/home\/\">electrical engineering<\/a> major.<\/p>\n<p>The event was an opportunity for students attending a Tribal college or university, a Native American-serving nontribal institution, or who are members of an active American Indian science and engineering society collegiate chapter to design, build and fly a high-powered rocket in a competition.<\/p>\n<p>Other members of the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa team included <strong>Katlynn Vicu&#241;a<\/strong> (junior, <a href=\"https:\/\/me.hawaii.edu\/\">mechanical engineering<\/a> with aerospace focus), <strong>Matthew Paulino<\/strong> (sophomore, mechanical engineering with aerospace focus) and <strong>Kahiamaikalani Walker<\/strong> (sophomore, mechanical engineering).<\/p>\n<h2>Faculty mentorship<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/manoa-engineering-first-nations-rocket-prep-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"people taking apart a rocket\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-160995\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/manoa-engineering-first-nations-rocket-prep-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/manoa-engineering-first-nations-rocket-prep-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/manoa-engineering-first-nations-rocket-prep.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The team members would like to thank <a href=\"https:\/\/windward.hawaii.edu\/\">Windward Community College<\/a> faculty mentor <strong>Jacob Hudson<\/strong>, who served as the team\u2019s rocketry mentor. The team would also like to give a special shout out to <strong>Kelli Ching<\/strong>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/a\/hawaii.edu\/nhsemp\/\/\">Native Hawaiian Science and Engineering Mentorship Program<\/a> director; and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kapiolani.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr><\/a> Professor <strong>Herve Collin<\/strong> and <abbr title=\"Science Technology Engineering Mathematics\">STEM<\/abbr> program employee <strong>Li-Anne Delavega<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;If someone is not sure what to do while in college, seek out projects, they&#8217;re a lot of fun and you learn a lot in a very short time,&rdquo; Arakawa said. &ldquo;When it comes to myself, I didn&#8217;t know anything about aerospace and now that I got a taste of what aerospace means, I wish I had more time in school to be more involved in aerospace-related study.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Continued excellence<\/h2>\n<p>Hudson and Arakawa are also part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/imua.wcc.hawaii.edu\/missions.html\">Project Imua Mission 10<\/a> team, which is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2022\/06\/13\/nasa-rocket-launch-uh-community-college-student-payload\/\">preparing for a <abbr>NASA<\/abbr> space rocket launch in August at the Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia<\/a>. The rocket will carry a scientific payload designed and built by <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Community College students. Mission 10 represents the fourth time that a <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Project Imua payload will be launched into outer space.
