In <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, where multigenerational homes are common, many young people are living with older adults with Alzheimer\u2019s disease and other dementias. Yet, youth caregivers are largely invisible to the eldercare service system. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/manoa-book-pomai-papa-1.jpg\" alt=\"pomai and papa book\" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-160920\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/manoa-book-pomai-papa-1.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/manoa-book-pomai-papa-1-130x130.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To shine light on this issue, a storybook for <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> youth, titled <em>Pomai and her Papa<\/em>, developed by University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/publichealth\/\">public health<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/thompson\/dsw\/\">social work<\/a> researchers, has been distributed to all 294 <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Department of Education public and charter schools, and all 51 public libraries statewide. Books were provided free of charge, and included a short guide for young people and one for supportive adults. <\/p>\n<p>Developed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/hakupuna\/\">H\u0101 K\u016bpuna, the National Resource Center for Native Hawaiian Elders<\/a>, a program of the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/thompson\/\">Thompson School of Social Work &#38; Public Health<\/a>, the storybook follows Pomai as she navigates troubling changes she begins to notice in her Papa. She starts to struggle in school because she is unsure how to help him.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2019\/07\/30\/childrens-booklet-on-dementia\/\">Booklet helps keiki understand dementia, memory loss<\/a><br \/>&#8212;July 30, 2019<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&ldquo;This book mirrors the lives of our students,&rdquo; says Joyce Pien, library literacy teacher at P\u0101lolo Elementary School. &ldquo;It validates their life experiences as grandchildren who cherish their aging grandparents.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>The book was based on research conducted by the H\u0101 K\u016bpuna team through which they interviewed youth, physicians, eldercare providers and cultural advisors. <\/p>\n<h2>Mnemonics help retain information<\/h2>\n<p>&ldquo;The data suggested that youth liked stories, especially those that reflected the faces and voices of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>,&rdquo; said <strong>Shelley Muneoka<\/strong>, coordinator of H\u0101 K\u016bpuna. &ldquo;We also learned that mnemonics can help youth recall larger pieces of information.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Thus, the mnemonic <span aria-label=\"HALIA\">HALI&#699;A<\/span> (fond remembrance), developed by Lana Sue <span aria-label=\"Kaopua\">Ka&#699;opua<\/span>, appears throughout the book that outlines symptoms of Alzheimer\u2019s disease and other forms of dementia:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This book mirrors the lives of our students<br \/> &#8212;Joyce Pien<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>H:<\/strong> Hard to remember names, events, basic information. May lose track of days, dates, time of year. Hard time finding things.<br \/>\n<strong>A:<\/strong> At risk of wandering and other unsafe behaviors.<br \/>\n<strong>L:<\/strong> Loses judgment, has harder time problem-solving.<br \/>\n<strong>I:<\/strong> Increasing difficulty in remembering words when speaking or writing.<br \/>\n<strong><span aria-label=\"A\">&#699;A<\/span><\/strong> <span aria-label=\"Ano\">&#699;Ano<\/span> (a person\u2019s basic nature, personality) changes. With these changes can come confusion, frustration, anger and impatience that can be seen in facial expressions, voice, gestures and behaviors.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The story book also provides links for more information about dementia,&rdquo; said <strong>Kathryn L. Braun<\/strong>, director of H\u0101 K\u016bpuna and professor in the Office of Public Health Studies. &ldquo;It also includes ways to connect to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alz.org\/hawaii\/about_us\/contact_us\">Alzheimer\u2019s Association-Aloha Chapter<\/a>.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/hakupuna\/pomai-and-her-papa\/\">Download <em>Pomai and Her Papa<\/em> for free<\/a>.
