When the rocket launched from Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia reaches sub-orbital flight, it will release the student-built experiment.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_160559\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-160559\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/system-project-imua-2022-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Three people working in a lab\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-160559\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-160559\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">D\u2019Elle Martin, Frank Bolanos, Caleb Yuen at Windward <abbr>CC<\/abbr><br \/><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/imua.wcc.hawaii.edu\/missions.html\">Project Imua Mission 10<\/a> students have been collaborating on this project for months. <a href=\"https:\/\/windward.hawaii.edu\/\">Windward <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr><\/a> students designed and built a camphor-powered sublimation rocket that will convert the camphor to gas to propel the small, light-weight rocket once the payload is released at the peak of the NASA rocket\u2019s flight. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.honolulu.hawaii.edu\/\">Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr><\/a> team designed a camera system and inertial measurement unit devices to monitor the sublimation rocket\u2019s motion. The entire payload is less than a foot long, weighs less than 15 pounds and is almost entirely encased in aluminum.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Project-based research like Mission 10 offers <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Community College students unique opportunities to explore and prepare for high-tech, STEM careers while working alongside NASA engineers,&rdquo; said Project Manager <strong>Joe Ciotti<\/strong>, a Windward <abbr>CC<\/abbr> professor. &ldquo;For these students, this really is rocket science and one powerful confidence builder.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_160557\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-160557\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/system-project-imua-2022-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Two people working in a lab\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-160557\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/system-project-imua-2022-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/system-project-imua-2022-2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/system-project-imua-2022-2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-160557\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">D\u2019Elle Martin, Jake Hudson at Windward <abbr>CC<\/abbr><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Project Imua (to move forward in &#699;\u014dlelo <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>) is a joint faculty-student enterprise of multiple <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Community College campuses in affiliation with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spacegrant.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Space Grant Consortium<\/a> that provides students with real-world, project-based learning opportunities. Students experiment with high-power rocketry and design and fabricate small payloads for space flight. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kauai.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kapiolani.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr><\/a> have been part of earlier missions.<\/p>\n<p>Later in June, Windward <abbr>CC<\/abbr> faculty mentor <strong>Jacob Hudson<\/strong>, Windward <abbr>CC<\/abbr> team lead <strong>Nikki Arakawa<\/strong> and Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr> team lead <strong>D\u2019Elle Martin<\/strong> will travel to the NASA facility to run the Project Imua Mission 10 payload through rigorous testing. Mission 10 represents the fourth time that a <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Project Imua payload will be launched into outer space.
