The award recognizes emerging Native Hawaiian leaders across <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Minton is the founder and director of <abbr>SONDH<\/abbr>\u2019s nationally-recognized <a href=\"https:\/\/nursing.hawaii.edu\/ike-ao-pono\/\"><span aria-label=\"IKE\">&#699;IKE<\/span> AO PONO program<\/a> that was established in 2002 to increase the number of Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander and Native American nurses in order to advance the healthcare and well-being of the people of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and beyond. The program proudly supports the <abbr title=\"Western Association of Schools and Colleges\">WASC<\/abbr> accreditation standing for <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa as an Indigenous Serving University.<\/p>\n<p>Under her leadership, the <span aria-label=\"IKE\">&#699;IKE<\/span> AO PONO program has reached the graduation of 505 Indigenous nurses, including 336 <abbr>BS<\/abbr>, 135 <abbr>MS<\/abbr>, 11 <abbr title=\"doctor of philosophy\">PhD<\/abbr> and 23 <abbr>DNP<\/abbr> prepared nurses. The program received the American Association Colleges of Nursing national award for nursing education innovation and was recognized for having the most Native nurses graduating within the United States by the late <abbr>U.S.<\/abbr> Senator Daniel K. Inouye in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>Minton, with a background in clinical psychology, is the first Native Hawaiian\/Maoli ever hired and tenured at <abbr>SONDH<\/abbr>. Her involvement with the university\u2019s Native Hawaiian Health Initiative has led to eight Native Hawaiians in faculty positions at the school, including <strong>Donna Palakiko<\/strong>, <abbr>PhD<\/abbr>, a former <span aria-label=\"IKE\">&#699;IKE<\/span> AO PONO student, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2021\/08\/09\/native-hawaiian-tenure-track-nurse\/\">first Native Hawaiian nurse hired in a <abbr>SONDH<\/abbr> tenure-track position<\/a>. She is presently fulfilling her Fulbright Scholarship in Australia. Hundreds of leaders in health and nursing professions that are making contributions in urban, rural, at-risk, underserved and marginalized communities are also graduates of the <span aria-label=\"IKE\">&#699;IKE<\/span> AO PONO program. Minton is a founding member of the <span aria-label=\"KUalii\">K&#363;ali&#699;i<\/span> and <span aria-label=\"PUkoa\">P&#363;ko&#699;a<\/span> Councils who advocate for Native Hawaiian programs throughout the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> System. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;As the director of Native Hawaiian Social Justice Programs, I bring the advocacy and <span aria-label=\"manao\">mana&#699;o<\/span> of my life experiences as an activist in Indigenous rights to my work at the nursing school and am proud to be the first Native Hawaiian\/Maoli ever hired or tenured as faculty at <abbr>SONDH<\/abbr> in over 100 years,&rdquo; said Minton, who has been involved with Native Hawaiian health and social justice initiatives for most of her life.<\/p>\n<h2>Collective collaboration<\/h2>\n<p>Minton\u2019s focus as a Maoli clinical psychologist and cultural health practitioner is to amplify the recovery of Kanaka Maoli and others from intergenerational trauma and historical grief through higher education.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;These accomplishments are shared precedents through the collaborative efforts of the students, the faculty and administration at <abbr>SONDH<\/abbr>, especially, Deans Dr. <strong>Mary Boland<\/strong> and Dr. <strong>Clem Ceria-Ulep<\/strong>, as well as <abbr>UH<\/abbr> President <strong>David Lassner<\/strong> and Âé¶¹´«Ã½M\u0101noa Provost <strong>Michael Bruno<\/strong>, Dr. <strong>Punihei Lipe<\/strong>, director of Native Hawaiian Affairs, <abbr>TRHT<\/abbr>, The Native Hawaiian Place of Learning Initiatives, including the <abbr>UHM<\/abbr> Strategic  Plan, Dr. <strong>Lilikala <span aria-label=\"Kameeleihiwa\">Kame&#699;eleihiwa<\/span><\/strong>, budget chair, and <strong><span aria-label=\"Kealii\">Keali&#699;i<\/span> Gora<\/strong>, director of <span aria-label=\"K\u016balii\">K&#363;ali&#699;i<\/span> and <span aria-label=\"P\u016bkoa\">P&#363;ko&#699;a<\/span> Councils, and other partners and funders who have provided collective support, especially the Queens Healthcare Systems, Dr. Jill Hoggard-Green, <abbr title=\"chief executive officer\">CEO<\/abbr>, Dr. Kelly Johnson, <abbr title=\"chief nursing officer\">CNO<\/abbr>, Dr. Cindy Kamikawa, <abbr>CEO<\/abbr>, Dr. <strong>Noreen Mokuau<\/strong>, former dean of the School of Social Work and Public Health, Dr. <strong>Keawe Kaholokula<\/strong>, director of Department of Native Hawaiian Health, Dr. <strong>Maenette Benham<\/strong>, <abbr>Âé¶¹´«Ã½West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span><\/abbr> chancellor, Dr. <strong>Diane Paloma<\/strong>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Board of Regents member, Dr. <strong>Naleen Andrade<\/strong>, also director of E Ola Mau a Mau, Dr. D.J. Mailer, former <abbr>CEO<\/abbr> of Kamehameha Schools, Dr. <strong>Jerris Hedges<\/strong>, dean of <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>, Papa Ola Lokahi, and other Native Hawaiian organizations,&rdquo; said Minton. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;N\u0101lani is a deeply committed proponent of Indigenous rights and has devoted her life to uplifting our Kanaka Maoli through her work,&rdquo; said Diane Peters-Nguyen, <abbr>CEO<\/abbr> of the American Red Cross Pacific Islands Region, who nominated Minton for the award. &ldquo;She has committed her life work to ending systemic, structural and operational racism through her work with the Tribunal, <span aria-label=\"Kahookolokolonui\">Kaho&#699;okolokolonui<\/span> Kanaka Maoli in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and at the <abbr title=\"United Nations\">UN<\/abbr> Geneva International Indigenous Peoples Working Groups, where she was designated <span aria-label=\"elele\">&#699;elele<\/span> pono by Dr. Kekuni Blaisdell, Tribunal Convenor, and contributed to the drafting of the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, which expanded self-determination under international law for all Indigenous Peoples worldwide.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>Peters-Nguyen added, &ldquo;N\u0101lani is an inspirational leader, educator and compassionate cultural practitioner to those she teaches and empowers, especially as a role model and mentor for future leaders and the next generations of our lahui.
