  {"id":16016,"date":"2013-04-17T17:11:32","date_gmt":"2013-04-18T03:11:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=16016"},"modified":"2021-11-24T16:14:43","modified_gmt":"2021-11-25T02:14:43","slug":"culinary-classic-showcases-hawaii-cc-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2013\/04\/17\/culinary-classic-showcases-hawaii-cc-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Culinary classic showcases <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> students"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"676\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WBPhAWKRfk4\" title=\"Youtube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The culinary arts students at <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaii.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Community College<\/a> get to showcase their work at the end of every spring semester at the annual Hilo Culinary Classic. <\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the final project for second year students before they graduate. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;They have to complete this segment of their training, which is buffet presentation, and after two years they can finally show their skills and talents that they learned here,&rdquo; said <strong>Allan Okuda<\/strong>, the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaii.hawaii.edu\/hawaiicc\/culinary-arts\/index.php\">culinary arts program<\/a> coordinator and professor. <\/p>\n<p>The students can compete in teams or individually, and first year students and non-students are also welcome to participate. <\/p>\n<p>Each entry is judged in accordance with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.acfchefs.org\/\">American Culinary Federation<\/a> rules, and receives either a gold, silver or bronze medal, or a certificate of completion. <\/p>\n<p>An entry in the cold platter buffet category featuring an impressive variety of p&#226;t&#233;s  took the overall top prize in 2013. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;All those sleepless nights, we didn&#8217;t even sleep last night,&rdquo; said <strong>Leizel Quiamas<\/strong>, a <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> culinary student who was on that wining team. &ldquo;It is a great feeling.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>Quiamas&#8217;s fellow student and teammate <strong>Jerome Manoag<\/strong> agreed. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We have been waiting for this for a long time, practiced after school, doing everything, one by one, until the food show comes,&rdquo; said Manoag. &ldquo;It feels great to get an award like this.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>First year student <strong>Tori Hiro<\/strong> received a silver medal for her hyper-realistic fish burger cake. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It&#8217;s different because usually people just think of cheeseburgers,&rdquo; said Hori with a smile. &ldquo;It was different and I went a different route. It&#8217;s like fish burger! You don&#8217;t see that all the time.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>The students take full advantage of the opportunity to be creative, knowing that their dishes will be on display for all to see. They also put together a buffet of appetizers for the hundreds of people who attend the Hilo Classic each year. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;At $9 a ticket,&rdquo; said Okuda. &ldquo;It is pretty hard to get an event with a beautiful show and some fine food for that price.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>The culinary program at <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> College Community in Hilo has been around for more than 50 years, offers a two-year degree and has about 100 students in the program at any given time.
