They can also add a double major to better understand and help dispel prejudices experienced by women, LGBTQ+ and marginalized groups in society.<\/p>\n<p>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/socialsciences.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Social Sciences<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/socialsciences.manoa.hawaii.edu\/about-the-college\/departments\/women-gender-and-sexuality-studies\/\">Department of Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies<\/a> (<abbr>WGSS<\/abbr>), formerly known as Women\u2019s Studies, offers an interdisciplinary approach to studying women and gender issues, featuring a <a href=\"https:\/\/wgss.manoa.hawaii.edu\/ba-requirements\/\"><abbr>BA<\/abbr> major with a fully online option<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/wgss.manoa.hawaii.edu\/certificate-requirements\/\">undergraduate<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/wgss.manoa.hawaii.edu\/queer-studies-certificate\/\">queer studies<\/a> certificates, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/wgss.manoa.hawaii.edu\/graduate\/\">graduate certificate<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We all deserve full health potential, but disparities exist among specific population groups in the attainment of that,&rdquo; said <strong>Lani Teves<\/strong>, <abbr>WGSS<\/abbr> chair and associate professor. &ldquo;This is why students have many opportunities across our curriculum to think critically and creatively about solutions to health inequities, and to see themselves as key actors in making health care more accessible and equitable across many communities.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>A <abbr>WGSS<\/abbr> student and two alumni explain why seeking a double major in <abbr>WGSS<\/abbr> made sense to them in pursuit of health care careers.<\/p>\n<h2>&lsquo;Topics touch so many strands of my identity&rsquo;<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_159906\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-159906\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/manoa-social-sciences-cassidy-silva-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"person in a green dress\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-159906\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/manoa-social-sciences-cassidy-silva-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/manoa-social-sciences-cassidy-silva-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/manoa-social-sciences-cassidy-silva.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-159906\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cassidy Silva<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Cassidy Silva<\/strong> came to <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2019\/07\/19\/students-raps-2019\/\">2019 as a Regents Scholar<\/a>. With the intent of applying to medical school after earning her bachelor\u2019s degree in cell biology, the Mililani High School graduate plunged headlong into <abbr>WGSS<\/abbr> and found the subject matter fascinating.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;There\u2019s a synergy that exists between all that I learn in the classroom, my past experiences, and my personal and professional goals,&rdquo; said Silva. &ldquo;Like that of no other field of study, <abbr>WGSS<\/abbr> topics touch so many strands of my identity.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>As a research intern at <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Medical Center for Women and Children, Silva helped recruit participants for a study on the diet and eating practices of Native Hawaiian mothers and their babies. Silva also ran the social media account of the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>-based organization SafeSex808, which focuses on expanding teen knowledge of safe and consensual sex.<\/p>\n<p>She used her <abbr>WGSS<\/abbr> education while interning at the John A. Burns School of Medicine\u2019s (<abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>) Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women\u2019s Health, which fits into her dream of becoming a doctor specializing in reproductive endocrinology and infertility. A Kalani High School graduate, Woods enrolled at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa in 2018 and was eager to take all the public health classes that were offered. Yet, as a sophomore, Woods felt something was missing.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It became clear that my public health education would not be complete without studying and understanding the historical, social and structural issues that have created and perpetuated health disparities,&rdquo; said the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2018\/07\/20\/uh-showcases-top-scholarship-winners\/\">2018 Regents Scholar<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s when <abbr>WGSS<\/abbr> became Woods\u2019 second major. Woods also found fulfilling part-time work at a local health center, where two aspects of the job were making organizational changes to ensure LGBTQ+ patients and employees feel safe and comfortable in the clinic, and meeting with patients seeking guidance on gender-affirming health care.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Our insurance system makes it very difficult for people to receive gender-affirming care, and it can be quite challenging and even traumatizing to navigate the health system on their own. I tried to take as much of that burden off the patient,&rdquo; they said. &ldquo;My advice to students, if you want to challenge yourself to deconstruct and reframe your ideas about society, and have a career working to create a more equitable society, <abbr>WGSS<\/abbr> is a great major to consider.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>&lsquo;I am a better person today because of <abbr>WGSS<\/abbr>&rsquo;<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_159908\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-159908\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/manoa-social-sciences-austin-ajimura-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"person in a green shirt stocking supplies\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-159908\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/manoa-social-sciences-austin-ajimura-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/manoa-social-sciences-austin-ajimura-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/manoa-social-sciences-austin-ajimura.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-159908\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Austin Ajimura checks on patient supplies in the <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> HOME Project van<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Austin Ajimura<\/strong>, who graduated in 2019 with his bachelor\u2019s in biology and <abbr>WGSS<\/abbr>, is pursuing a master\u2019s in public health in social and behavioral health sciences, with the hopes of becoming a public health professional.<\/p>\n<p>From early childhood to serving as Mililani High\u2019s student body president, Ajimura wanted to pursue a career in medicine. &ldquo;But what I failed to consider were the forces that affect my patients\u2019 lives external to medicine&rdquo;, said Ajimura. &ldquo;When someone leaves the clinic, no matter how much you try to help them, they will continue to face their challenges.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Ajimura is still haunted by the memory of a client while volunteering at <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>\u2019s <abbr>HOME<\/abbr> (Houseless Outreach and Medical Education) Project.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The client was in the final stages of cancer, a chronically houseless veteran and not receiving needed medical care or social support. We were able to assist to the best of our abilities but I never saw this individual again. I think about that person a lot. The experience further fueled my passion for change, because it was the first time I really saw the direct and devastating impacts of health disparities and poor access to health care.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Ajimura\u2019s main duties at <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>HOME<\/abbr> are assisting patients to obtain health insurance, establish primary care, and identify\/overcome insurance and treatment barriers. He also works with city first-responders who have contracted or been exposed to COVID-19 by doing data collection and case investigation, determining appropriate quarantine\/isolation timelines, and providing follow-up.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I am a better person today because of <abbr>WGSS<\/abbr>.
