For nearly two decades, <abbr>ASEAN<\/abbr> (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) nations and the <abbr>PDC<\/abbr> have worked together to advance early-warning and disaster risk reduction science throughout Southeast Asia. <abbr>PDC<\/abbr> is a vital partner who has helped the <abbr>AHA<\/abbr> Centre (<abbr>ASEAN<\/abbr> Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on disaster management) ensure the best science and technology are appropriately and effectively utilized to prepare for and respond to disasters throughout the region,&rdquo; said <abbr>AHA<\/abbr> Centre Assistant Director for Disaster Monitoring and Analysis Lawrence Anthony Dimailig.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/tag\/pacific-disaster-center\/\">Learn more about the Pacific Disaster Center<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Dimailig said <abbr>PDC<\/abbr>\u2019s DisasterAWARE platform and risk information serve as the foundation of the <abbr>AHA<\/abbr> Centre\u2019s multi-hazard Disaster Monitoring and Response System, which is integral to the operational coordination of nearly every major disaster event in the region.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<abbr>PDC<\/abbr>\u2019s innovations and agility have produced some of the best, science, data and technology in the field of disaster management\u2014supporting not only <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and the Pacific, but the global humanitarian community in some of the most disaster-prone regions of the world,&rdquo; said <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> President <strong>David Lassner<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/system-pdc-un-award-feature-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"group of people\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-159890\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/system-pdc-un-award-feature-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/system-pdc-un-award-feature-130x130.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/system-pdc-un-award-feature.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><abbr>PDC<\/abbr>\u2019s Director of Global Operations <strong>Erin Hughey<\/strong>&#8212;a key architect of the Center\u2019s National Disaster Preparedness Baseline Assessment program\u2014said that even as a large part of the world continues to lack effective multi-hazard early warning systems, a country\u2019s understanding of multi-hazard risk at the national and local level is equally important. She said the center\u2019s baseline assessment puts risk information into action and operationalizes the goals of the United Nations Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The baseline assessment goes well beyond a printed report to be read once by policymakers.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, we are extending a host of new subnational data and risk assessment results to the entire global humanitarian community for active use in response, preparation, and recovery from disasters,&rdquo; said Hughey during her award acceptance speech for <abbr>PDC<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<p>Hughey said assessment data and risk information also feed robust modeling and analytics provided in <abbr>PDC<\/abbr>\u2019s DisasterAWARE tool\u2014helping to anticipate hazard impacts to populations, infrastructure and humanitarian needs with much greater accuracy.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/system-pdc-un-award-5-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"people in front of large screen display of maps\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-159889\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/system-pdc-un-award-5-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/system-pdc-un-award-5-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/system-pdc-un-award-5.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This year, Panama achieved a significant and historic milestone when the country\u2019s newly-established Comprehensive Disaster Risk Management Cabinet met for the first time to advance national policies, strategic plans, and programs that reduce disaster risks.&rdquo; said Adherbal de la Rosa, Panama\u2019s director of the Technical Office of Comprehensive Disaster Risk Management. &ldquo;The benchmark assessment, which <abbr>PDC<\/abbr> conducted in close partnership with a broad community of stakeholders in the international, national, local and <abbr>NGO<\/abbr> communities over the course of the past two years, has effected measurable change within the Ministry of the Interior and <abbr>SINAPROC<\/abbr> (Panama\u2019s civil defense system).&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Carl Smith, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Disaster Preparedness, Management, and Reconstruction in The Bahamas, said recent <abbr>PDC<\/abbr>\u2019s assessment findings provide evidence to support policies and programs that increase resilience and &ldquo;institute risk-informed decision making that encourages sustainable development, multi-agency cooperation, and helps align capacity development with priority needs.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Lassner said <abbr>PDC<\/abbr>\u2019s evidence-based approach to disaster management has helped shape the field of disaster risk reduction for more than 25 years and will continue to do so.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;With the formidable challenges posed by climate change, and the complexity of managing multiple hazards as exemplified through the height and aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, governments must place even greater focus on adaptation and resilience,&rdquo;
