The event is open to the public. (<a href=\"https:\/\/uhhilochildrenslitconference.weebly.com\/register.html\">Register here<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The conference aims to celebrate both the creativity and passion for children\u2019s literature in our local communities and throughout <span aria-label=\"Hawaii,\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½,<\/span>&rdquo; said <strong>Leanne Day<\/strong>, assistant professor of English and conference organizer. &ldquo;I am thrilled to host a diverse range of panelists who are all invested in storytelling and education for <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\u2019s\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½\u2019s<\/span> children.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_159786\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-159786\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/hilo-leanne-day-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"woman smiling\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-159786\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/hilo-leanne-day-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/hilo-leanne-day-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/hilo-leanne-day.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-159786\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Leanne Day<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The conference will be co-moderated by <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Hilo students <strong>Katina Gronowski<\/strong>, an English major, and <strong>Allison Pi&#241;a<\/strong>, a marine science major with biology and English minors.<\/p>\n<p>The conference logo is designed by student <strong>Graecin Beebe<\/strong> who is also majoring in English. &ldquo;I see the way stories and legends have shaped my understanding of not only my home in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, but also the rest of the world around me,&rdquo; Beebe explained.<\/p>\n<h2>Keynote<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2019\/05\/20\/olelo-hawaii-harry-potter\/\">Former <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa kumu <span aria-label=\"olelo\">&#699;&#333;lelo<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> (Hawaiian language instructor) <strong>Keao NeSmith<\/strong><\/a> will share his experiences translating popular fantasy series such as <em>Harry Potter<\/em> and <em>Lord of the Rings<\/em> into <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\u2019s\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½\u2019s<\/span> native tongue. NeSmith currently teaches Hawaiian at <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Preparatory Academy (<abbr>HPA<\/abbr>) in Waimea.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Teaching at <abbr>HPA<\/abbr> has presented new opportunities for me to involve my students in the creative and translation process of the <em>Harry Potter<\/em> series,&rdquo; he explained. &ldquo;I would often, at the start of class, spend five minutes or so projecting my translation on the large screen. I\u2019d invite my students to watch the English column and shout out words and concepts they know in Hawaiian and I would type it in the Hawaiian column as I translate. Although they are only able to contribute in small ways, their Hawaiian word suggestions ultimately will appear in print as their contribution, and they enjoy seeing how the Hawaiian column is worded.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Panelists<\/h2>\n<p>Comprised of four panels, the conference will encourage audience discussion and Q&amp;A with the speakers.
