  {"id":159488,"date":"2022-05-23T11:18:44","date_gmt":"2022-05-23T21:18:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=159488"},"modified":"2022-05-24T11:17:00","modified_gmt":"2022-05-24T21:17:00","slug":"tropical-cyclone-climate-book","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2022\/05\/23\/tropical-cyclone-climate-book\/","title":{"rendered":"Climate variability, tropical cyclone activity focus of new book"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/manoa-soest-climate-tropical-cyclone.jpg\" alt=\"book cover\" width=\"250\" height=\"350\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-159503\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/manoa-soest-climate-tropical-cyclone.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/manoa-soest-climate-tropical-cyclone-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/manoa-soest-climate-tropical-cyclone-93x130.jpg 93w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Future projections of tropical cyclone activity in response to the increased concentrations of greenhouse gases is the focus of a new book written by University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/soestwp\/\">School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/a> (<abbr>SOEST<\/abbr>) professor of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/atmo\/\">atmospheric sciences<\/a> <strong>Pao-Shin Chu<\/strong> and Hiroyuki Murakami from the NOAA Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/books\/climate-variability-and-tropical-cyclone-activity\/24D2A66B7AEC961D7B4B3FFB8EB636AD\"><em>Climate Variability and Tropical Cyclone Activity<\/em><\/a>&rdquo; was published by Cambridge University Press and is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Climate-Variability-Tropical-Cyclone-Activity\/dp\/1108480217\">available<\/a> in the Americas and Asia.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;As Earth warms, we anticipate to see extreme events become more frequent or more intense\u2014meaning increasing hurricane rainfall, flooding and destructive winds; heat waves; drought and wildfires,&rdquo; said Chu, who is also the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> State Climatologist. &ldquo;These events will undoubtedly impact communities around the world.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Topics highlighted in the book include climate variability on various timescales; the effects of different climate modes, such as El Ni&#241;o and the Pacific Meridional Mode, on the formation, intensity and track of tropical cyclones in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans; and predictions of tropical cyclones and how climate change will impact associated extreme typhoon rainfall.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_159505\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-159505\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/manoa-soest-pao-shin-chu-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"man smiling\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-159505\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/manoa-soest-pao-shin-chu-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/manoa-soest-pao-shin-chu-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/manoa-soest-pao-shin-chu.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-159505\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pao-Shin Chu<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This book is intended for use in graduate-level college courses.
