These grant awards include support for historic collections, exhibitions and documentaries, humanities infrastructure, scholarly research and curriculum projects.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/national-endowment-humanities-300x136.jpg\" alt=\"National Endowment for the Humanities seal\" width=\"300\" height=\"136\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-159417\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/national-endowment-humanities-300x136.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/national-endowment-humanities-130x59.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/national-endowment-humanities.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I am so honored that the <abbr>NEH<\/abbr> recognizes the historical significance of <span aria-label=\"Uluulu\">&#699;Ulu&#699;ulu:<\/span>\u2019s moving image collections,&rdquo; said project director and <span aria-label=\"Uluulu\">&#699;Ulu&#699;ulu:<\/span> head archivist <strong>Janel Quirante<\/strong>. &ldquo;Their support will make it possible for us to digitize and describe hundreds of hours of footage which hasn\u2019t been viewed in decades.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Uluulu\">&#699;Ulu&#699;ulu:<\/span>\u2019s &ldquo;20th Century <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>: Moving Images from Territory to Statehood&rdquo; is a three-year project set to begin in September 2022, and involves the digitization of 890 audiovisual assets spanning eight collections that document Hawaiian history and culture from the 1920s to 2000s.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I\u2018m looking forward to sharing this newly digitized footage with our students and researchers, as well as with the filmmakers who recorded the original reels, and with the family members of the people whose images, voices and stories are captured on these videotapes and films,&rdquo; Quirante said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_159418\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-159418\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/west-oahu-uluulu-tapes-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Ulu ulu archives tapes\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-159418\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/west-oahu-uluulu-tapes-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/west-oahu-uluulu-tapes-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/west-oahu-uluulu-tapes.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-159418\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Videotapes of recordings of 442nd Infantry veterans from the 442nd Legacy Center Collection<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The materials to be digitized come from collections such as Juniroa Productions, 442nd Legacy Center, Katsugo Miho, Samuel P. King, Making Waves Films, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> People\u2019s Fund and <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Council for the Humanities.<\/p>\n<p>The nominated collections for digitization align with <abbr>NEH<\/abbr>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.neh.gov\/250#:~:text=The%20National%20Endowment%20for%20the%20Humanities's%20special%20initiative%20A%20More,Declaration%20of%20Independence%20in%202026.\">A More Perfect Union initiative<\/a>, in highlighting the stories of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s citizens who witnessed and participated in the road to statehood and the consequences of admission into the union.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<abbr>NEH<\/abbr> is proud to support these exemplary education, media, preservation, research, and infrastructure projects,&rdquo; <abbr>NEH<\/abbr> Chair Shelly C.
