The Department of Linguistics in the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/call\/\">College of Arts, Languages &#38; Letters<\/a> (<abbr>CALL<\/abbr>) recognizes the recent graduate.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I feel honored,&rdquo; expressed Noschese. &ldquo;The linguistics department made this happen and took a chance on me. The linguistics department and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/kokua\/\">KOKUA<\/a> worked with me, accommodating needs for me to be successful. I can&#8217;t express my gratitude enough!&rdquo;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/tag\/commencement\/\">More highlights from the commencement ceremonies and our amazing graduates<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Noschese comes from a fourth generation of a culturally Deaf family of American Sign Language (<abbr>ASL<\/abbr>) users, and is the first person in her family to receive a full university education. After graduating from The Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf, she attended Gallaudet University, the world\u2019s only liberal arts university for deaf people, and earned a <abbr>BA<\/abbr> in American Sign Language and an <abbr>MA<\/abbr> in linguistics. Noschese said she waited to pursue a <abbr>PhD<\/abbr> until she found the right program at the right university.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_159383\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-159383\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/manoa-architecture-noschese-e-lassner-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Emily Jo Noschese\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-159383\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/manoa-architecture-noschese-e-lassner-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/manoa-architecture-noschese-e-lassner-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/manoa-architecture-noschese-e-lassner.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-159383\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Emily Jo Noschese with President Lassner<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After several years of teaching <abbr>ASL<\/abbr> in various colleges and universities, Noschese moved to Honolulu and began teaching <abbr>ASL<\/abbr> classes at <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Community College. She soon began transcription work on the Endangered Languages Documentation Program project on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2013\/03\/01\/new-hawaii-language-discovered-by-uh-researchers\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Sign Language<\/a> (<abbr>HSL<\/abbr>) at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa. Impressed by her knowledge and enthusiasm, the <abbr>HSL<\/abbr> project staff encouraged Noschese to apply to the <abbr>PhD<\/abbr> program in <abbr>CALL<\/abbr>\u2019s linguistics department. In her application, she stated that she had wanted to get a <abbr>PhD<\/abbr> since she was 10 years old, and that <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa was the perfect place, given its expertise in language documentation and revitalization.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We are honored that Emily Jo chose to build upon her academic interests and passion here at M\u0101noa,&rdquo; said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Provost <strong>Michael Bruno<\/strong>. &ldquo;I know that her extraordinary success and lasting contributions to the university will inspire many haum\u0101na (students) who have yet to begin their own journey of discovery.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Noschese\u2019s groundbreaking dissertation focuses on language ideology in younger <abbr>ASL<\/abbr> users. Her work also helped the department create and teach <abbr>ASL<\/abbr> courses that are taught by other deaf instructors today.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Noschese&#8217;s dissertation is a valuable resource for <abbr>ASL<\/abbr>-based education programs, especially because it targets the attitudes of the young parent generation, who, along with teachers and schools, play a role in deaf education curricula,&rdquo; said <strong>Andrea Berez-Kroeker<\/strong>, professor and graduate chair of linguistics, who co-chaired Noschese&#8217;s dissertation committee with <strong>Woody
