  {"id":15844,"date":"2013-04-12T15:32:36","date_gmt":"2013-04-13T01:32:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=15844"},"modified":"2020-11-06T14:46:25","modified_gmt":"2020-11-07T00:46:25","slug":"460000-awarded-for-hawaiian-environmental-and-social-issues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2013\/04\/12\/460000-awarded-for-hawaiian-environmental-and-social-issues\/","title":{"rendered":"$460,000 award for Hawaiian environmental and social issues"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> &lt; 1<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minute<\/span><\/span><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/kresge.jpg\" alt=\"boys in a taro patch\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-15860\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/kresge.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/kresge-260x173.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Detroit-based Kresge Foundation has awarded $460,000 to Lamak&#363; <span aria-label=\"Naauao\">Na&#699;auao<\/span> (Knowledge Torch), a new <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa<\/a> program that will build the capacity of the Native Hawaiian community to participate in decision-making in critical environmental and social issues.<\/p>\n<p>Participants in the Lamak&#363; <span aria-label=\"Naauao\">Na&#699;auao<\/span> project will receive training and policy tools designed to help them contribute to decisions involving island food security, renewable energy research, cultural practices and the impacts of climate change.<\/p>\n<p>The project is spearheaded by Loli Aniau, <span aria-label=\"Makaala\">Maka&#699;ala<\/span> Aniau (<abbr>LAMA<\/abbr>), a new program housed within the <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/hshk\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaiinuiakea\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½nui&#257;kea<\/span> School of Hawaiian Knowledge<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.hawaii.edu\/\">William S. Richardson School of Law<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The Lamak&#363; <span aria-label=\"Naauao\">Na&#699;auao<\/span> project aligns well with <span aria-label=\"Hawaiinuiakea\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½nui&#257;kea<\/span>&#8217;s mission which is to pursue, perpetuate, research, and revitalize all areas and forms of Hawaiian knowledge and apply this knowledge to provide service and support to the Hawaiian community and beyond,&rdquo; said Dean of the <span aria-label=\"Hawaiinuiakea\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½nui&#257;kea<\/span> School of Hawaiian Knowledge <strong>Maenette K.P. Ah Nee Benham<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>William S.
