The symposium, an annual event that has been canceled for the past two years due to COVID-19, was held in-person on April 11, at Moku o <span aria-label=\"Loe\">Lo&#699;e<\/span> (Coconut Island).<\/p>\n<p>More than 100 donors, k&#363;puna from the community and <abbr>HIMB<\/abbr> faculty, staff and haum&#257;na attended the event. Haum&#257;na presented management applied and solution based research on a broad range of marine research topics encompassing coral reefs, sharks, whales, monk seals and fishes.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_157656\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-157656\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/manoa-himb-nakoa-goo-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"student interview\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-157656\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/manoa-himb-nakoa-goo-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/manoa-himb-nakoa-goo-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/manoa-himb-nakoa-goo.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-157656\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nakoa Goo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This past year, $92,810 was awarded through 11 scholarships to 33 haum&#257;na. Scholarships from donations were used for tuition assistance, books, lab supplies, travel and other research costs.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It\u2019s a great opportunity because it supports future collaborations in research and also helping to let the donors know how their funding is being used, it\u2019s also leading to a lot of positive outcomes,&rdquo; said <strong>Nakoa Goo<\/strong>, a <abbr title=\"doctor of philosophy\">PhD<\/abbr> student at <abbr>HIMB<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<p>The symposium was an opportunity for <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> haum&#257;na to present their research in a public forum and for donors to meet their recipients and interact with one another to support future research collaborations.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_157657\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-157657\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/manoa-himb-scholarship-symposium-group-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"group photo\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-157657\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/manoa-himb-scholarship-symposium-group-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/manoa-himb-scholarship-symposium-group-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/manoa-himb-scholarship-symposium-group.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-157657\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Photo credit: Jeffrey DePonte)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;I think this is a cool place to be able to show your work and be able to sit with people that are really smart, like <abbr>PhD<\/abbr> and masters students, and feel like &lsquo;Ya I can do this with them as well. I&#8217;m presenting on information and data that I\u2019m collecting.&rsquo; So I think it\u2019s just a confidence boost for me as an undergrad to be over here presenting,&rdquo; said <strong>Hanalei <span aria-label=\"HoopaiSylva,\">Ho&#699;opai-Sylva,<\/span><\/strong> a <abbr>UH<\/abbr> undergraduate student in marine biology.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-nine presentations were given in-person and four presentations were pre-recorded.
