The <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/academics\/cafnrm\/\">College of Agriculture, Forestry, and Natural Resource Management<\/a>, along with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.siue.edu\/ncerc\/\">National Corn-to-Ethanol Research Center<\/a> at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville and the nonprofit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biomade.org\/\">BioMADE<\/a>, have partnered to form <span aria-label=\"ALAKAI\">ALAKA&#699;I<\/span>, the acronym for Applied Life-Science Academy: Knowledge Advancing Industry.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_51860\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51860\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/hilo-matthews-bruce-portrait.jpg\" alt=\"Bruce Matthews\" width=\"200\" height=\"265\" class=\"size-full wp-image-51860\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/hilo-matthews-bruce-portrait.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/hilo-matthews-bruce-portrait-196x260.jpg 196w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-51860\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bruce Matthews<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;The bioeconomy is critical to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, while maintaining and improving standards of living by replacing fossil fuels with renewable biomass for the materials and fuels we use daily,&rdquo; said <strong>Bruce Mathews<\/strong>, dean of the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo agriculture college.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Related <em><abbr>UH<\/abbr> News<\/em> story:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2021\/04\/18\/can-sugarcane-create-jet-fuel\/\">Can sugarcane create jet fuel?<\/a>, April 18, 2021<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The academy is geared toward accelerating climate change solutions by developing industry-relevant training for delivery in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> and across the U.S. <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo will pilot flagship training in July 2022 and in summer 2023.
