The Hawaiian storytelling genre is flourishing rapidly and inspired <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa graduate student <strong>\u0100kea Kahikina<\/strong>, a Hawaiian theatre <abbr>MFA<\/abbr> candidate, to write and direct a comedic hana keaka, <em><span aria-label=\"Hooilina\">Ho&#699;oilina<\/span><\/em>, which will close out the 2021&#8211;22 mainstage season.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Things are happening&#8230;I\u2019m glad to be a part of this movement that is growing exponentially and creating more new works on a grand scale,&rdquo; said Kahikina, who teaches &#699;\u014dlelo <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> courses at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa. &ldquo;I couldn\u2019t be more thankful to be doing this at this level.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_157150\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-157150\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/manoa-theatre-hooilina-1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Person holding a child\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-157150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/manoa-theatre-hooilina-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/manoa-theatre-hooilina-1-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/manoa-theatre-hooilina-1.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-157150\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A portrait of Mrs. Ellis (the late matriarch in <em><span aria-label=\"Hooilina\">Ho&#699;oilina<\/span><\/em>) and her mysterious <span aria-label=\"moopuna\">mo&#699;opuna<\/span>, Lili-lei (Artwork by M\u0101h\u016bcha)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em><span aria-label=\"Hooilina\">Ho&#699;oilina<\/span><\/em>, which means legacy or inheritance, is set in pre-pandemic <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> upon the luxurious slopes of <span aria-label=\"Leahi\">L&#275;&#699;ahi<\/span> and hones in on a Kanaka Maoli (Hawaiian) family anxiously poised for a will reading that will determine the fate of a huge inheritance from their beloved matriarch. Just as the will is about to be read, a quirky stranger appears at the door, claiming her right to the hefty endowment. As chaos ensues, family secrets are revealed, causing them to question their own relationships, identity and future as K\u0101naka, while being insidiously constricted by the pressures of capitalism and cultural loss. The characters explore real-time issues such as what it takes to be considered Hawaiian.<\/p>\n<h2>Spotlighting &#699;\u014dlelo m\u0101h\u016b<\/h2>\n<p>Most of the play is performed in Hawaiian, however audiences will also hear performers speak in a multitude of languages such as Pidgin, English and what Kahikina dubs &#699;\u014dlelo m\u0101h\u016b (Queer creole). His concept of the m\u0101h\u016b dialect is one that he claims is a descendant of &#699;\u014dlelo kake, a long-standing traditional form of garbling language to conceal information. Today, &#699;\u014dlelo m\u0101h\u016b incorporates Pig Latin and is delivered in a style similar to the cadence of Pidgin.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Putting that language in there is a way to honor my queer community, my m\u0101h\u016b brothers and sisters that I\u2019ve learned from,&rdquo; Kahikina explained. &ldquo;My partner, <strong><span aria-label=\"Kaiminaauao\">Ka&#699;imina&#699;auao<\/span> Cambern<\/strong>, he\u2019s taught me everything that I put into the script.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.showtix4u.com\/events\/kennedytheatre\">Ticket prices for limited live audiences<\/a> range $5&#8211;$25 for the production set to premiere April 15, 16, 22 and 23 at 7:30 p.m. and April 24 at 2 p.m. Helping Kahikina bring the production to life are award-winning <abbr>UH<\/abbr> alumnus <strong>Jonah Bobilin<\/strong> (lighting design), <strong>Rick Greaver<\/strong> (sound design), <strong>Kara Nabarrete<\/strong> (scenic design, <abbr>MFA<\/abbr> candidate), <strong><span aria-label=\"Kaneikoliakawahineikaiukapuomua\">Kaneikoliakawahineika&#699;iukapuomua<\/span> Baker<\/strong> (costume design, incoming <abbr>MFA<\/abbr> student), <strong>I\u0101sona Kaper<\/strong> (Assistant Director, <abbr>MFA<\/abbr> candidate), <strong>Kaipulaumakaniolono<\/strong> (dramaturge, <abbr>MFA<\/abbr> candidate) and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/liveonstage\/theatre\/hawaiian-theatre\/\">Hawaiian Theatre<\/a> program founder Kumu <strong>Tammy <span aria-label=\"Hailiopua\">Haili&#699;&#333;pua<\/span> Baker<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In 2014, Baker established Hawaiian Theatre at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa. <em><span aria-label=\"Laieikawai\">L&#257;&#699;ieikawai<\/span><\/em>, an inaugural hana keaka production she wrote and directed, played to sold out audiences on the Kennedy Theatre mainstage in 2014 before touring to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Island, <span aria-label=\"Molokai\">Moloka&#699;i<\/span>, <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> and Aotearoa (New Zealand). In 2019, Kennedy Theatre premiered Baker\u2019s production <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2019\/09\/23\/aua-ia-kennedy\/\"><em><span aria-label=\"Aua\">&#699;Au&#699;a<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Ia\">&#699;Ia<\/span>: Holding On<\/em><\/a>.
