  {"id":157033,"date":"2022-03-29T12:46:17","date_gmt":"2022-03-29T22:46:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=157033"},"modified":"2022-03-29T12:46:17","modified_gmt":"2022-03-29T22:46:17","slug":"health-policy-initiative-launch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2022\/03\/29\/health-policy-initiative-launch\/","title":{"rendered":"$10<abbr title=\"Million\">M<\/abbr> commitment launches <abbr>UH<\/abbr>\u2019s Health Policy Initiative"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/manoa-social-sciences-health-policy-initiative.jpg\" alt=\"computer and stethoscope\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-157034\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/manoa-social-sciences-health-policy-initiative.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/manoa-social-sciences-health-policy-initiative-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/manoa-social-sciences-health-policy-initiative-130x73.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/hawaii.edu\/hpi\/home\">Health Policy Initiative<\/a> (<abbr>HPI<\/abbr>), which aims to improve health care in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, was launched thanks to a $10 million multi-year commitment from the Med-QUEST Division of the state Department of Human Services.<\/p>\n<p>Housed in <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/socialsciences.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Social Sciences<\/a>, <abbr>HPI<\/abbr> will facilitate public impact research in health analytics under the direction of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ssri.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">Social Science Research Institute<\/a>, led by <strong>Jack Barile<\/strong>. <abbr>HPI<\/abbr> is a cornerstone of the university\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/uhealthy.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>UHealthy<\/abbr> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span><\/a> initiative that leverages <abbr>UH<\/abbr> programs to improve health and health care locally and in the Pacific.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and the Pacific region offer many unique factors that positively impact an individual\u2019s quality of life, from cultural strengths and strong community bonds to access to nature and greenspace,&rdquo; said <strong>Denise Eby Konan<\/strong>, College of Social Sciences dean. &ldquo;At the same time, our residents experience high rates of health disparities, illness and vulnerabilities. This funding is key to addressing these emerging and chronic health issues and is the focal point of our partnership with Med-QUEST.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Goals for <abbr>HPI<\/abbr> include:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Fostering collaboration among <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa and government agencies (e.g., the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> departments of health and of human services) to address emerging and chronic health issues via rapid translation of faculty research and participation in working groups.<\/li>\n<li>Advancing understanding of the causes and consequences of poor health and wellness in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and the Pacific region using diverse research methods.<\/li>\n<li>Evaluating existing health and social programs to identify and recommend best practices.<\/li>\n<li>Crafting innovative, research-supported policies and initiatives aimed at improving health and decreasing costs.<\/li>\n<li>Building the capacity of the state\u2019s workforce and developing future health leaders to work directly with state departments and agencies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;The Med-QUEST Division is excited to further our partnership with the College of Social Sciences.
