Burns School of Medicine<\/a> (<abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>) on March 16, announced a six-year, $10 million commitment from Dr. Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg. This gift will fund the new <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> Medical Training Track, a multi-pronged program on <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> to help address the physician shortage and improve access to healthcare services.<\/p>\n<p><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> President <strong>David Lassner<\/strong> said, &ldquo;We are tremendously grateful to Dr. Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg for their generous gift and commitment to our island\u2019s community health. This gift will have a lasting ripple effect that will directly improve the health and wellness of <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>\u2019s families today, and in the future.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>According to <abbr>UH<\/abbr>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/govrel\/docs\/reports\/2021\/act18-sslh2009_2021_physician-workforce_annual-report_508.pdf\">2021 Annual Report for the State Legislature<\/a> (<span class=\"small-text\"><abbr title=\"Portable Document Format\">PDF<\/abbr><\/span>), <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> needs more than 61 doctors to meet the local community\u2019s current healthcare needs. <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaiihealthmatters.org\"><span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> health indicators<\/a> also note that the Garden Island has more uninsured people, more strokes and hypertension, and more adults with cancer than the rest of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii.\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½.<\/span> The physician shortage, which has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, poses serious challenges for all residents&#8212;especially for those struggling with chronic illness and preventable diseases.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/system-medical-gnrc-feature-1-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Medical students putting on P P E\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-156565\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/system-medical-gnrc-feature-1-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/system-medical-gnrc-feature-1-130x130.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/system-medical-gnrc-feature-1.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> Dean <strong>Jerris Hedges<\/strong> said, &ldquo;We know that doctors who train in rural areas, especially areas where they have family and community ties, are more likely to practice in a rural setting. To address <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>\u2019s physician shortage, we need more medical students from <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>, and we must expand medical training on <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>.&rdquo; Hedges continued, &ldquo;<abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> selects 80% or more of its student population from the state of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and has one of the highest rates of graduate retention in the nation post training. This six-year initiative will help us grow medical student and resident trainee numbers on <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> and help practicing doctors on <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> benefit from the stimulating educational environment associated with training new doctors.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg said, &ldquo;Expanding the medical community will help improve access to healthcare services for local residents&#8212;which is crucial to building a healthier community on <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>. We\u2019re honored to support the John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> as they strive to address the physician shortage by creating a more robust pipeline of doctors.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Through the <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> Medical Training Track, six <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> medical students, with ties to <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> or another neighbor island and\/or a strong interest in rural health, will be accepted into this program annually beginning July 2022. The program will fund tuition and fees for all four years, as well as transportation and lodging.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The gift will also enable <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> to:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Develop a faculty base and offer rural residencies to equip future physicians with the experience needed to practice on <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> and in other rural communities that do not have multiple specialists readily available.<\/li>\n<li>Add 21 residents to <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> annually.<\/li>\n<li>Hire a <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> Director for Interdisciplinary Training and Simulation and support staff to oversee and expand interdisciplinary training and education with <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> Community College health sciences students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> District Health Officer Janet Berreman added, &ldquo;Being the District Health Officer on <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> for five years, including through the pandemic, has highlighted for me the critical importance of healthcare providers who are deeply embedded in and committed to our community.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Berreman continued, &ldquo;No one brings the level of intimate knowledge and skilled attention to the health of the community as well as someone who is from the community, trained in the community, and chooses to serve that community. This program is a much-needed opportunity to support the medical training of <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>\u2019s future physicians, while ensuring that their training prepares them to live and practice here.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Integral to the program\u2019s success is growing the strategic partnership between <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> and healthcare partners, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaiipacifichealth.org\/wilcox\/\">Wilcox Health<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaiipacifichealth.org\/about-us\/about-hph-medical-group\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Pacific Health Medical Group<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/system-medical-gnrc-3-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Medical students practicing stitches\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-156564\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/system-medical-gnrc-3-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/system-medical-gnrc-3-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/system-medical-gnrc-3.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> Medical Director for the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Pacific Health Medical Group <strong>Geri Young<\/strong> has been a practicing physician on <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> for more than 40 years. She said, &ldquo;We very much appreciate the generous gift from Dr. Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg to help address the state\u2019s physician shortage.&rdquo; She continued, &ldquo;Having the opportunity for medical students and residents to train on <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> is priceless, as many will ultimately decide to practice in a rural area such as <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>Young added, &ldquo;My husband, <strong>Robert Teichman<\/strong>, and I are both proud graduates of <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>. Over the years, we have seen how so many of the <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> alumni who practice on our neighbor islands serve in our communities for their entire career. The rewards of practicing medicine and supporting good health and wellness for our friends and neighbors are great. This program will give our future physicians a meaningful opportunity to experience this.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Chief Medical Director for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hoolalahui.org\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hoola\">Ho&#699;ola<\/span> Lahui <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span><\/a> Kapono Chong-Hanssen added, &ldquo;By providing such a longitudinal opportunity for budding physicians to experience health care and life on <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>, this program has wonderful potential to address the physician shortage on the neighbor islands and inspire more of our own healers to return to serve our communities after completing their training. We believe the collaborative relationships built between the various health care organizations on <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> will provide a valuable experience for these medical students and help them appreciate the famous saying &ldquo;<span aria-label=\"Maikai\">Maika&#699;i<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>, hemolele I ka malie (Beautiful <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>, peaceful in the calm).&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Travis Hong<\/strong>, who was born and raised on <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>, has been appointed director of rural training and will oversee the program. Currently a physician at <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Medical Center for Women &#38; Children specializing in pediatric emergency medicine, Hong is passionate about medical student and resident education and mentoring.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Like all physicians who grew up on <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>, I left the island for school and training, but <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> has always been home to me.
