From 1866 to 1969, more than 8,000 people who contracted Hansen\u2019s disease were exiled to the remote area along the north shore of <span aria-label=\"Molokai\">Moloka&#699;i<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kerri Inglis<\/strong>, a history professor at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Hilo and student peer mentor <strong>Sheldon Rosa<\/strong> spearheaded a presentation at the school\u2019s Campus Center about what patients endured.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We wanted to present to the students in attendance, not only some basic background about the history of Hansen\u2019s disease (leprosy) in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, but also to be able to reflect on some of the parallels and lessons about resilience and perseverance that we can apply to our circumstances today,&rdquo; Inglis said.<\/p>\n<p>Rosa highlighted parallels between the current COVID-19 pandemic and the wave of leprosy that swept through <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> in the 1800s.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Even though we are going through these hard times, it\u2019s very similar to the issues that the k\u016bpuna had to face,&rdquo; he explained. &ldquo;Just honoring them for their resiliency as well as how they persevered, stuck together, that &#699;ohana unit.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Lei <span aria-label=\"Halia\">Hali&#699;a<\/span> O Kalaupapa, Lei in Remembrance of Kalaupapa<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_156478\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-156478\" style=\"width: 676px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/hilo-lei-lai-2.jpg\" alt=\"People making lei using their feet\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"size-full wp-image-156478\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/hilo-lei-lai-2.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/hilo-lei-lai-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/hilo-lei-lai-2-130x73.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-156478\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Photo credit: Kirsten Aoyagi)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Students learned to make lei <span aria-label=\"lai\">l&#257;&#699;&#299;<\/span> or ti-leaf lei to be laid on patients\u2019 graves in Kalaupapa. Countless strands of <span aria-label=\"lai\">l&#257;&#699;&#299;<\/span> were twisted and tightly woven into a braid-like lei.<\/p>\n<p>Attendees were encouraged to converse with each other while remembering the nature of their task and keeping thoughts pono.<\/p>\n<p>The February 24 event was hosted by the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/campuscenter\/leadership\/\">Ka Lama Ku Development Leadership Program<\/a>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo <a href=\"http:\/\/kipuka.uhh.hawaii.edu\/\">K\u012bpuka Native Hawaiian Student Center<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huimalamamakanalua.org\/what-we-do\">Hui M\u0101lama Makanalua<\/a>, a non-profit community group dedicated to paying homage to leprosy patients.
