ʻOhana with keiki who participated in N\u0101 Pua Noʻeau<\/span> submitted letters of support during the award’s nomination process<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

A University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa program aimed at increasing the number of Native Hawaiian students who attend and graduate from a UH<\/abbr> campus earned a coveted award for its efforts. N\u0101 Pua Noʻeau<\/span><\/a> (NPN<\/abbr>) UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa received the 2022 Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Children\u2019s Action Network<\/a> (HCAN<\/abbr>) “Champions for Children Unsung Hero” award, which recognizes individuals who made a profound difference for keiki in their community.<\/p>\n

NPN<\/abbr> program Director Kinohi Gomes<\/strong> and Program Assistant Lisa Letoto-Ohata<\/strong> beat out more than 90 nominees. HCAN<\/abbr> honored the program\u2019s dedication to Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>‘s keiki and their ʻohana.<\/p>\n

“N\u0101 Pua Noʻeau<\/span> UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa has developed and tested virtual programs containing hands-on and interactive culture-based learning that is rooted in cultural identity,“ said Letoto-Ohata. “Using the ʻohana as the backbone of learning and development, STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math), literacy, and college and career pathways are integrated into each session.”<\/p>\n

NPN<\/abbr>, which is part of the campus\u2019 Â鶹´«Ã½nuiākea<\/span> School of Hawaiian Knowledge<\/a> and Native Hawaiian Student Services<\/a>, has run programs for students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade since 1989. Centers are stationed at UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa, UH<\/abbr> Hilo, UH<\/abbr> Maui College, Kauaʻi<\/span> Community College and UH<\/abbr> West Oʻahu<\/span>. NPN<\/abbr> provides haum\u0101na (students) of all ages along with their \u02bbohana a plethora of first-class learning opportunities ranging from visual and culinary arts, literacy and STEM aimed at providing direct access and a bridge between the community and higher education.<\/p>\n

Gomes and Letoto-Ohata will be honored at the HCAN<\/abbr> Champions for Children annual fundraiser and awards ceremony on April 6 at The Royal Hawaiian hotel.<\/p>\n
