The <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Geophysical Society (<abbr>UHGS<\/abbr>), a group led by <abbr>SOEST<\/abbr> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/gg\/\">Department of Earth Sciences<\/a> graduate students, will raise funds through their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stbaldricks.org\/teams\/mypage\/133381\/2022\">annual charity softball tournament<\/a>. During the last fundraiser, <abbr>UHGS<\/abbr> donated $1,238 to the foundation.<\/p>\n<h2>Commitment runs deep<\/h2>\n<p>Many participants return, year after year, to contribute to the worthy cause.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bruce Shiramizu<\/strong>, a <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> pediatrician and researcher, has mentored numerous summer fellows, conducted important research and was honored for his long-term commitment to children and their families, and raising funds for lifesaving research.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_156225\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-156225\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/manoa-soest-st-baldricks-hayley.jpg\" alt=\"little girl in princess dress\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-full wp-image-156225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/manoa-soest-st-baldricks-hayley.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/manoa-soest-st-baldricks-hayley-130x130.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-156225\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Haley<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;Dr. Bruce has shaved his head for 10 years and at our last event, he was knighted as a &lsquo;Knight Commander&rsquo; in the honorable League of Legendary Heroes, our knights of the Bald Table,&rdquo; said Cockshell.<\/p>\n<p>After receiving the honor at the virtual event, Shiramizu presented his research that was funded by a St. Baldrick&#8217;s grant. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=taX3OQkUI1Q\">His presentation can be viewed online<\/a> (starting at 46 minute mark).<\/p>\n<p>Cockshell and her family have a deep personal commitment to the mission of St. Baldrick\u2019s Foundation. At five years old, their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stbaldricks.org\/kids\/mypage\/3252\">daughter Haley<\/a> was diagnosed with Medulloblastoma, a brain and spinal cord cancer, and began a long and very hard battle for her life.
