Promo\"  allow=\"fullscreen; accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen data-no-lazy=\"1\" data-skipgform_ajax_framebjll=\"\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/div><\/figure>\n<p style=\"font-size:85% !important;padding-top:6px;\"><abbr>TOPP<\/abbr> To Go! is one facet of <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>\u2019s national award.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kapiolani.hawaii.edu\"><span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Community College<\/a> has won another national award for online education. The <a href=\"https:\/\/upcea.edu\/\">University Professional and Continuing Education Association<\/a> (<abbr>UPCEA<\/abbr>) Strategic Innovation in Online Education Award often celebrates one specific innovative program at a higher education institution, but <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>\u2019s online education programs and classes are now supported by a complex network of interconnected initiatives and projects. The <a href=\"https:\/\/upcea.edu\/upcea-announces-2022-association-award-recipients\/\">2022 award<\/a> recognizes and celebrates that these interwoven initiatives are responsible for the high quality of the online education provided by the college.<\/p>\n<h2>Professional development<\/h2>\n<p>A focus on professional development has served as a cornerstone for the campus\u2019 network of innovations. These include <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>\u2019s nationally recognized <a href=\"https:\/\/ohana.kapiolani.hawaii.edu\/topp\/\"><abbr>TOPP<\/abbr><\/a> (Teaching Online Prep Program), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AZkIrVIpSzg\"><abbr>TOPP<\/abbr> To Go!<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/sumrcamp.wixsite.com\/kapiolanisummercamp\"><span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Summer Camp<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=T40m4DqZ9CM\">Fundamentals of Digital Accessibility<\/a> training and SPOTLIGHT. The programs have provided professional development for online teachers at <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> and across the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>System.<\/p>\n<p>Professional development has been flourishing with 184 faculty from seven campuses trained by <abbr>TOPP<\/abbr>, for which <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> received the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2020\/01\/31\/kapiolani-topp-honor-2020\/\"><abbr>UPCEA<\/abbr> award in 2020<\/a>, and 517 employees from all 10 Â鶹´«Ã½campuses who participated in <abbr>TOPP<\/abbr> To Go!<\/p>\n<h2>Supporting students<\/h2>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> is also among the first of the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> campuses to join the <a href=\"https:\/\/nc-sara.org\/\">National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements<\/a>, allowing students from other states and U.S. territories to take online classes at the college. To support online students, <a href=\"https:\/\/rise.articulate.com\/share\/SozsIZ5oxt4BvIPAG-Bsg2cIOdA6Nl5E#\/?_k=p3rnsg\">S\u014cL: Success for Online Learners<\/a>, an online readiness module, can be embedded into online classes. A new orientation for fully online learners also helps to ensure that students will get the most out of their online learning experiences.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I applaud the faculty and staff of the Distance Education Team for their hard work,&rdquo; said Chancellor <strong>Louise Pagotto<\/strong>. &ldquo;Since 2017, their collective efforts to advance distance education at <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> through multifaceted professional development opportunities and infrastructure initiatives have resulted in a high quality, rigorous and engaging online learning environment for our students.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Looking forward<\/h2>\n<p>Anticipating changes to the accreditor\u2019s requirements for distance education (<abbr>DE<\/abbr>) that will be implemented in July 2022, the campus developed and instituted a <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1aFVaDcPxzXUjAUNpbPlAFy6Vz6GvtUQsErZ4sXde6SA\/edit\"><span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> definition of Regular and Substantive Interaction<\/a>. With the committed efforts of more than 25 faculty members, the campus also initiated a <abbr>DE<\/abbr> Class Coaching Program that both ensures that all its online classes comply with federal and Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges standards and provides an opportunity for online teachers to engage in meaningful pedagogical discussions with their peers.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the efforts of committed staff, faculty and administrators, 19 complete online degree and certificate pathways have been opened and are in the process of being incorporated into campus structures.
